A Las Vegas Team Set to Join the NBA

The NBA Board of Governors has voted to approve the initial stage of exploring a potential league expansion by adding two new franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle. This move could eventually increase the number of teams in the league to 32, as part of a long-term strategy aimed at growing the game and expanding its global fan base.
This decision represents only the first step in a broader process, as the league will now begin discussions and negotiations with investors and stakeholders interested in establishing new teams in both cities.

Seattle remains one of the strongest candidates to regain its former franchise, the SuperSonics, which relocated years ago to Oklahoma City. Meanwhile, Las Vegas has emerged as a rapidly growing sports hub, having hosted several major NBA events, including the All-Star Game, as well as the annual Summer League, which serves as a key platform for showcasing young talent and players seeking opportunities in the league.

This initiative also reflects the broader sports boom both cities have experienced in recent years. Each has secured franchises in the NHL and enjoys strong fan engagement, while both are also home to NFL teams. In addition, Las Vegas is set to welcome the Oakland Athletics MLB franchise upon the opening of its new stadium in 2028, further strengthening its position as one of the leading sports cities in the United States.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stated that the vote highlights the Board’s strong interest in evaluating expansion opportunities in these two markets, noting that both Las Vegas and Seattle have long-standing basketball fan bases, making them logical choices should the league proceed. He added that the next phase will involve in-depth discussions with potential investors before a final decision is made.

Any expansion plan will still require approval from 23 out of the 30 team owners, a critical step before moving forward with implementation. This means the project is still in its early stages and may take time before becoming a reality.

The move comes amid a significant rise in NBA franchise valuations in recent years. Estimates suggest that a new franchise could be valued between $7 billion and $10 billion, reflecting the surge in sports franchise prices. The Phoenix Suns were sold in 2022 for $4 billion, followed by the Boston Celtics at $6.1 billion, while the Los Angeles Lakers set a new record with a $10 billion valuation—the highest ever paid for a sports team in U.S. history.

If final approval is granted, the two new teams are expected to join the league starting from the 2028–2029 season, marking the NBA’s first expansion since the Charlotte Hornets joined in 2004.

From a structural standpoint, both new franchises are likely to be placed in the Western Conference, which could require shifting an existing team to the Eastern Conference to maintain balance. Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves have been mentioned as the leading candidates for such a move.
