Boston Celtics Begin Building a New Championship Contender
As the NBA's free agency negotiation period entered its first full day, one of the biggest stories was a blockbuster trade between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers. The deal would send veteran forward Paul George to Boston, while Celtics star Jaylen Brown heads to Philadelphia in what is already one of the most significant moves of the offseason.
Boston's return extends beyond acquiring George. The Celtics are also set to receive two first-round draft picks and two second-round selections, highlighting the front office's determination to rebuild a championship-calibre roster following the disappointment of an early playoff exit.
The trade comes only days after reports linked Brown with a potential move involving Greek superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo before the latter completed his transfer from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat, leaving Brown's future the subject of intense speculation throughout the offseason.
Brown departs Boston after spending ten consecutive seasons with the franchise, leading the Celtics to the playoffs every year during his tenure. He reached six Eastern Conference Finals, appeared in two NBA Finals, captured the 2024 NBA championship, and was named NBA Finals MVP.
He also enjoyed the finest individual season of his career in 2025-26, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game while helping Boston finish second in the Eastern Conference despite Jayson Tatum missing an extended period with a ruptured Achilles tendon. The Celtics' season ultimately came to an end with a first-round playoff defeat to Philadelphia.
Boston have also strengthened their frontcourt by signing NBA champion centre Mitchell Robinson from the New York Knicks, while veteran point guard Mike Conley is reportedly close to joining the franchise as well.
Harris Set for San Antonio
Elsewhere, reports indicate that veteran forward Tobias Harris has agreed to join the San Antonio Spurs on a two-year, $31 million contract following the conclusion of his second spell with the Detroit Pistons.
Harris played a key role in Detroit's resurgence, helping the Pistons record their best finish in the Eastern Conference and secure the franchise's first playoff series victory since 2008.
In San Antonio, Harris will join an ambitious project built around French superstar Victor Wembanyama after the Spurs enjoyed an outstanding season that ended with an appearance in the NBA Finals before falling to the New York Knicks.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly reached an agreement with the Utah Jazz to acquire centre Walker Kessler in exchange for two first-round draft picks.
Although Kessler appeared in only five games last season because of a shoulder injury, he enjoyed an outstanding campaign the previous year, averaging 11.1 points and 12.2 rebounds while leading the NBA in offensive rebounds with an average of 4.6 per game.
The Lakers have not stopped there. Reports also suggest they have reached agreements with three free agents—Georgian forward Sandro Mamukelashvili, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton—as part of their plan to strengthen the roster around Luka Dončić.
In another notable move, Norman Powell has agreed to join the Chicago Bulls on a two-year contract after an impressive season in which he averaged 21.7 points per game.
