Ronaldo Breaks Record but Portugal Denied Qualification by Szoboszlai’s Late Strike

Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance once again lit up the night in Lisbon, but Portugal’s hopes of sealing an early ticket to the 2026 World Cup were halted by a dramatic late equaliser from Dominik Szoboszlai as Hungary held them to a 2-2 draw.

At 40, Ronaldo continues to defy the limits of longevity and excellence. His two first-half goals not only rescued Portugal from an early deficit but also etched his name deeper into football history — he now holds the record for the most goals in World Cup qualifying with 41, surpassing Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz (39).

The encounter began with a shock for the home side as Attila Szalai converted a Szoboszlai assist in the eighth minute. But the Portuguese captain quickly restored order, sliding in Nelson Semedo’s cross for the equaliser in the 22nd minute before producing a composed finish from Nuno Mendes’ delivery to put his team ahead before the break.

Portugal appeared on course to join England — who sealed qualification with a 5-0 victory over Latvia — in confirming their spot for next summer’s tournament in North America. Yet, in the 91st minute, Liverpool’s Szoboszlai silenced the Estádio da Luz with a stunning late leveller, leaving Portugal five points clear at the top of Group F with two matches remaining.

Ronaldo’s extraordinary tally now stands at 948 career goals, including 143 for his country — achievements spanning a record-breaking 22-year international career crowned by Euro 2016 glory and two UEFA Nations League titles. Still, the elusive World Cup remains his final frontier, with his best run coming in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-finals.

Portugal’s next chance to book their World Cup place comes on 13 November in Dublin against the Republic of Ireland, who remain in contention after a 1-0 win over Armenia.
