Sinner Ends the Season With a Title and a Win Over Alcaraz

Italian star Jannik Sinner capped his season in style with a major title and a statement victory over his biggest rival, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, as he successfully defended his ATP Finals crown by winning 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in the championship match held in Turin.

Heading into their 16th career encounter, Sinner had lost twice in a row to Alcaraz, who had already secured the year-end World No. 1 ranking. The Spaniard had beaten the Italian in the final of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 — a match Sinner was forced to withdraw from while trailing 0-5 in the opening set — and again in the US Open final, winning in four sets.

backed by strong home support, Sinner sealed the contest in two hours and 15 minutes to claim his sixth title of 2025 and the 24th of his career. He also became the ninth player to win the ATP Finals title in consecutive years or more — and only the fourth this century to do so, following Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt (2001–2002), Switzerland’s Roger Federer (2003–2004, 2006–2007, 2010–2011), and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic (2012–2015, then 2022–2023).

Sinner, who reached the final for the third straight year (losing to Djokovic in 2023), also became just the third player to lift the trophy twice in a row on home soil, after American John McEnroe and German Boris Becker.

After the match, Sinner said: “It was tough today. When you play against Carlos, you have to bring your best. I served incredibly well at times, but he is one of the best returners in the world. It’s clear that Novak (Djokovic) is strongly present in his style of play. It was a difficult match, but ending the season this way means a lot to me. It’s incredible.”

For his part, Alcaraz said: “I’m happy with the level I played at. He hasn’t lost a match indoors for two years,” before turning to Sinner and adding: “That shows how amazing you are as a player. You and your team work incredibly hard every time. You always come back stronger after every defeat — and you don’t have many of those. A fully deserved final.”
