A Comfortable Victory Takes Barcelona Back to the Top of La Liga
Barcelona reclaimed top spot in La Liga after securing a comfortable 3-0 home win over Levante in Match week 25.
Barça went into the match fully aware that anything less than victory could further complicate their title ambitions, especially after last weekend’s defeat to Girona, which had seen them slip to second place. However, a timely favor from Osasuna, who defeated Real Madrid at the weekend, handed the Catalan side a golden opportunity to retake first place — an opportunity they seized with a disciplined display and clinical finishing at decisive moments.
The technical gap between the two sides was evident from the opening minutes. Despite Levante, who are battling near the foot of the table in second-from-bottom position, attempting to surprise the hosts with an early attack in the first minute through Carlos Álvarez, the effort lacked power and precision, allowing goalkeeper Joan García to deal with it comfortably.
In the fourth minute, Eric García burst down the left flank and delivered a precise low cross into the penalty area, where youngster Marc Bernal was perfectly positioned to convert from close range and hand Barcelona the lead. The early goal gave the hosts a clear psychological edge and allowed them to dictate the tempo, while Levante struggled to cope with the intensity.
Despite Barcelona’s dominance, Levante nearly found an equalizer, but García produced a fine save to preserve his clean sheet. At the other end, Robert Lewandowski missed a chance to double the lead after a rebound fell kindly to him inside the box, but he failed to capitalize.
Just before half-time, Barcelona struck again. Frenkie de Jong took advantage of lax marking to meet a pinpoint cross from João Cancelo and head home in the 32nd minute, doubling the advantage.
In the second half, the hosts maintained control, although Lewandowski and Raphinha both squandered promising opportunities. Meanwhile, Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan made a strong save to deny a powerful effort from Jules Koundé.
As the match approached its conclusion, substitute Fermín López sealed the result with a third goal in the 81st minute, unleashing a powerful strike from outside the box that found the back of the net. Ryan later denied Raphinha’s header and another close-range effort from López to prevent further damage.
With the win, Barcelona moved up to 61 points from 25 matches, one point clear of Real Madrid, reigniting the title race and restoring confidence to the defending champions. The victory reaffirmed that the battle for La Liga will remain open until the final stretch of the season.
Levante, meanwhile, remain on 18 points, leaving their survival hopes in La Liga increasingly precarious.
