Now 39 and approaching his 40th birthday in March, Neuer remains a central figure under Vincent Kompany. Despite a rare mistake in last weekend’s 2–2 draw with Union Berlin that halted Bayern’s 16-match winning streak, the veteran has featured in 14 of the team’s 17 matches this campaign, reaffirming his value as one of football’s greatest modern goalkeepers. His consistency, even at this stage of his career, mirrors the resilience that helped define Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph and Bayern’s decade of domestic dominance.

While Bayern are eager to maintain stability between the posts, Neuer is in no rush to commit. The club is delighted with the physical transformation he has undertaken in recent months, with his regimen now including daily sessions with physiotherapists, weight-training before every team practice, and additional strength work twice weekly. These adjustments illustrate a player pushing to extend his longevity, even if he insists he is “taking things day by day.”

Speaking ahead of Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month, Neuer struck a calm tone about his uncertain future. He emphasized the importance of health, fitness, motivation, and the club’s long-term direction—elements he believes must align before any decision is made. “It’s still far too early,” he said. “But when the time comes, we will talk.”

Inside Bayern, optimism remains high. Not only do officials believe a new agreement is achievable, they are also convinced that competition from the highly regarded 22-year-old Jonas Urbig is fueling Neuer’s motivation. Urbig, who joined from Cologne earlier this year and has made only 15 appearances so far, has impressed with his attitude and professionalism. The young goalkeeper has embraced the chance to learn from Neuer and Sven Ulreich, noting recently that the trio enjoy a harmonious, mutually supportive working relationship.

Should Neuer continue beyond 2026, Bayern believe Urbig could profit from another season of development under the guidance of two of Germany’s most seasoned goalkeepers. But a further variable could shape Neuer’s future: a potential return to the national team. With Marc-Andre ter Stegen facing uncertainty at Barcelona, voices within the German Football Federation are said to be urging a reconsideration. Sporting director Rudi Völler has reportedly spoken directly with Neuer about a comeback ahead of next summer’s World Cup, though the final call rests with head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Whether Neuer ultimately signs on for another year, retires, or returns to the international stage remains unknown. What is clear, however, is that even at nearly 40, the Bayern captain continues to shape the conversation around German goalkeeping—just as he has for nearly two decades.
