Morocco face their toughest test against Cameroon
The Moroccan national team face their most difficult challenge at the Africa Cup of Nations when they take on Cameroon on Friday in the quarter-finals.
Cameroon are considered a long-standing historical nemesis for Morocco, who have never managed to defeat them in the finals of the continental tournament. Collective memory still recalls the painful 1–0 defeat in the semi-final of the 1988 edition, which was held in Morocco, before Cameroon went on to claim their second African title out of five.
The two teams have met on 12 occasions across all competitions, with Cameroon emerging victorious in seven matches and four ending in draws, while Morocco suffered defeat in their most recent encounter.
Morocco only managed to break this curse in November 2018, when they recorded their first-ever win over Cameroon with a 2–0 victory, thanks to two goals from Hakim Ziyech in Casablanca, during the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Cameroon have delivered solid performances in the current edition of the tournament. The decision to replace Belgian coach Marc Brys with local manager David Bago around 20 days before the start of the competition, following failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, has had a positive impact on the team’s results in Morocco.

- Morocco have progressed on three of the last four occasions (2008, 2017, 2021) in which they reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, failing only in 2010 against Egypt, who went on to lift the title.
- Morocco have reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals for the first time since 2021, and have only advanced past this stage once in their last four attempts (a 3–1 win over Algeria in 2004).
- Two of Cameroon’s last three goals at the Africa Cup of Nations were scored from quick transitions and were netted by Christian Kofane.
- No team has conceded fewer goals at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations than Morocco (one goal).
- Morocco recorded more than 55% possession in each of their four matches at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations so far, while Cameroon’s highest possession rate was 49% in their second-round match against Côte d’Ivoire.
- Cameroon’s Carlos Baleba has won 67% of his duels at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (18/27), the highest success rate among all players with at least 10 duels contested. He won 10 of 11 duels in the round-of-16 match against South Africa.
- Ibrahim Diaz has scored in all four of his Africa Cup of Nations matches (four goals), making him the most prolific Moroccan scorer in a single edition of the tournament. Only Ahmed Faras (six) and Youssef En-Nesyri (five) have scored more goals for Morocco in the competition’s history.
