Paris Saint-Germain Complete Their Revenge with Another Big Win Over Chelsea
Paris Saint-Germain continued their UEFA Champions League title defense in impressive fashion, securing a convincing 3–0 victory over Chelsea in the second leg of the Round of 16.
The Parisian side had already taken a major step toward qualification with a 5–2 win in the first leg, sealing their place in the quarter-finals and completing their revenge against the London club after losing to them in last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup final in the United States, where they were beaten 3–0.
Match Highlights
The French capital side wasted little time in asserting control, starting the match with strong attacking intent that unsettled Chelsea’s defense from the opening minutes. Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring just six minutes in, capitalizing on a long pass from Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov and poor defensive positioning to calmly slot the ball past Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.
Less than ten minutes later, in-form winger Bradley Barcola doubled PSG’s lead following a well-worked team move initiated by young midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery, who broke through the defense and combined with Moroccan full-back Achraf Hakimi before setting up Barcola, who finished superbly into the top corner, underlining PSG’s early dominance.
Chelsea attempted to respond and had a clear opportunity to reduce the deficit when Dutch full-back Jorrel Hato surged forward and delivered a pass into the box to Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández, but his effort deflected off Brazilian defender Marquinhos for a corner, wasting a valuable chance for the hosts.
Despite sporadic attempts from Chelsea to get back into the game or score a consolation goal, PSG’s defensive solidity and Safonov’s sharp goalkeeping denied them, particularly with a crucial save from close range late in the first half.
In the second half, PSG maintained their control without easing off and added a third goal through young substitute Senny Mayulu in the 62nd minute, following another assist from Hakimi, turning the match into a one-sided display that reflected the gap in quality and composure.
Chelsea’s night worsened in the closing stages after Trevoh Chalobah suffered an injury following a strong collision with Hakimi, forcing him to leave the pitch on a stretcher. With all substitutions already used, the Blues finished the match with ten men, capping a difficult evening for their supporters.
PSG will now face the winner of the tie between Galatasaray and Liverpool in the next round, entering the quarter-finals with high confidence as they continue their quest to defend their title.
