Rio Ngumoha Steals Spotlight as Liverpool’s Rising Star Impresses in Double-Header

Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha made headlines as Liverpool kicked off their pre-season with a rare double-header against Athletic Bilbao, showcasing not just their £263.5m summer signings but also the prodigious talent emerging from the youth ranks.

Ngumoha, who only joined Liverpool from Chelsea’s academy last year, started in the early kick-off—a match largely composed of the Reds’ second-string squad—and wasted no time making an impact. The England U17 international scored just two minutes in with a stunning solo effort, picking up a loose ball near his own box and curling it into the top corner after a dazzling run. He followed it up by assisting Darwin Nunez minutes later, cushioning down a cross from Ben Doak.

Liverpool went on to win that game 4-1, with Nunez, Doak, and Harvey Elliott also finding the net. Ngumoha exited to a standing ovation and chants of his name from the Anfield faithful, his dribbling and composure belying his years.

His exploits in pre-season have sparked widespread attention, adding to an impressive tally that includes a goal against Yokohama F. Marinos and an assist versus AC Milan. He made club history earlier this year by becoming the second-youngest player to start a competitive match for Liverpool, aged just 16 years and 135 days.

With Diogo Jota tragically passing away in a car crash and Luis Diaz now at Bayern Munich, Liverpool’s attacking line is undergoing significant change. Ngumoha could well find himself in the mix this season alongside the likes of Salah, Cody Gakpo, and new arrival Hugo Ekitike—especially if Nunez, reportedly targeted by Saudi clubs, departs.

In the later game, manager Arne Slot unveiled his expensive acquisitions—Florian Wirtz, Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Giorgi Mamardashvili. But it was Gakpo who drew attention, scoring twice at the right end and once accidentally into his own net during a thrilling 3-2 win.

Slot, who astonishingly won the Premier League last season with minimal reinforcements, now appears to be shaping a side in his own vision. But defensive depth remains a concern, particularly with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez sidelined. Young midfielder Trey Nyoni had to fill in at centre-back during the first game.

Still, Slot praised the team’s attacking prowess: “Across both games we created many chances and scored seven goals. That’s a big positive. But we need to tighten up on set-pieces before we face Crystal Palace next week in the Community Shield.”

Ngumoha’s steady rise, capped by his maturity and confidence, has made it increasingly difficult to keep expectations in check. As former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie said, “He’s an exceptional talent—the challenge now is managing the hype.”
