England in Turmoil as their Coach Faces Criticism

England coach Gareth Southgate expressed his regret over the “unusual” atmosphere after being pelted with beer cups and hearing boos directed at the Three Lions following their boring goalless draw with Slovenia on Tuesday in Cologne, during the third and final round of the European Cup Group C fixtures in Germany.

Despite the underwhelming performance, Southgate’s men topped the group with five points, a point secured from a hard-fought 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark. However, their performances were met with disdain from England supporters in Cologne.

While Slovenia’s players and fans celebrated their historic qualification to the round of 16 at one end of the field, Southgate and his squad were greeted with boos as they approached the England supporters.

Beer mugs were thrown at Southgate, missing him but leaving a clear impact on his psyche, especially after receiving criticism from former England players following the disappointing 1-1 draw against Denmark in the second round. The criticism intensified on the eve of the round of 16.

Southgate suggested that the relative success achieved during his eight-year tenure, including finishing as runners-up in the last European Cup and reaching the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, created expectations that the national team is currently struggling to meet.

With his contract set to expire at the end of this year, Southgate hinted that he might leave his post if he fails to win the European Cup. Despite the negativity surrounding England’s faltering campaign, he maintained a positive outlook.

He said, “I am in a really good place. I ask the players to be brave, and I will not hesitate to thank the fans. The fans were exceptional with the team in the second half, and that makes a difference. It’s crucial they stay with the team regardless of their feelings about me. I have been close to the England team for 20 years. I have seen and understood this dynamic.”
