First European Trophy of the Season Between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham

The first trophy of the season will be played on Wednesday evening between Paris Saint-Germain, the UEFA Champions League winners, and English side Tottenham Hotspur, the UEFA Europa League champions, in the UEFA Super Cup match to be held at the Friuli Stadium in Udine, Italy.

PSG enjoyed an exceptional season, winning every possible trophy before losing the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea.

However, they will have to cope without Portuguese midfielder João Neves, who is suspended, and move past the shock caused by the arrival of goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, following the public fallout with Italian keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who played a key role in last season’s achievements.

Donnarumma, who failed to reach an agreement with the management over the terms of a new contract, has been left out of the squad travelling to Udine, opening the door to his departure amid speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.

Despite this, PSG still boast plenty of firepower, led by Ousmane Dembélé — the frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or and the team’s top scorer last season with 35 goals in 53 matches — along with Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Tottenham’s New Look

As for Tottenham, after a disappointing Premier League campaign, they redeemed themselves by winning the Europa League title against fellow English side Manchester United (1-0), having finished 17th in the Premier League table.

The London club prepared for this clash by playing six friendly matches, losing the last one 0-4 to Bayern Munich after defeating Reading 2-0, Arsenal 1-0, drawing 2-2 with Wycombe, 0-0 with Luton Town, and 1-1 with Newcastle.

However, the “new-look” Spurs have lost their South Korean star Son Heung-min, who decided to end his 10-year stint with the club to join Los Angeles FC in the United States.

The English side, who will be missing six players against PSG, were also dealt a major blow with attacking midfielder James Maddison suffering an ACL injury.

This will be the first-ever encounter between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur.

In 2025, PSG have won five of their eight matches against English teams (lost 3), but lost their most recent encounter 0-3 to Chelsea in last month’s FIFA Club World Cup final.

Tottenham have won their last two matches against French teams, beating Marseille home and away in the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League group stage.

This is only the second time a French team has competed in the UEFA Super Cup; the first was PSG themselves, who lost 9-2 on aggregate to Juventus in 1997.

Tottenham are the eighth English team to feature in the UEFA Super Cup, with six of the previous seven winning the trophy on their debut — the exception being Arsenal, who lost 0-2 on aggregate to AC Milan in 1995.

Eleven of the last twelve UEFA Super Cup editions have been won by the Champions League winners, with the only exception being Atlético Madrid’s 4-2 victory over Real Madrid in 2018.

PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé has scored three goals and provided three assists in six of his eight matches against English teams this year.
