Al Ahly Retain Egyptian Super Cup Title

Al Ahly retained their Egyptian Super Cup crown after defeating arch-rivals Zamalek 2-0 on Sunday at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The Red Devils lifted the trophy for the fifth consecutive time — and the 16th in their history — thanks to goals from Achraf Bencharki (45’) and Marwan Attia (72’), securing their first title under new Danish head coach Jess Thorup.

Al Ahly, the Egyptian Premier League champions, had booked their place in the final after beating Ceramica Cleopatra — the EFA Cup winners — 2-1 in Thursday’s semifinal. Meanwhile, Zamalek, winners of the Egypt Cup, advanced by defeating Pyramids FC on penalties following a goalless draw.

The victory also marked Al Ahly’s second win over Zamalek this season, after beating them 2-1 in their first league encounter. It was also their eighth triumph in ten Egyptian Super Cup encounters between the two giants.

Al Ahly had the first major chance of the match when Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” cut in from the left and forced goalkeeper Mohamed Awad into a fine save for a corner (9’).

Zamalek responded through Angolan striker Chico Banza, who dribbled past Aliou Dieng, Mohamed Hany, and Yasser Ibrahim before sending a shot narrowly wide from a tight angle (35’).

The breakthrough arrived just before halftime when Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” delivered a pinpoint cross from the right that Bencharki expertly controlled on his chest before drilling a low effort past Awad (45’).

Marwan Attia doubled Al Ahly’s lead midway through the second half, smashing home a powerful finish after Taher Mohamed’s clever run and assist from the left wing (72’).

Zamalek thought they had reduced the deficit in the 79th minute when Seifeddine Jaziri headed in Omar Gaber’s free-kick, but the goal was disallowed for handball.

In the third-place playoff, Ceramica Cleopatra defeated Pyramids FC 2-1 at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
