Gianluigi Donnarumma Breaks Silence on Jamal Musiala Injury: ‘I Was Shocked and Saddened’

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has spoken out following intense scrutiny over the horrific injury suffered by Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala during the Club World Cup quarter-final. The Italian international was involved in a violent on-field collision that left Musiala with a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle — an injury that is expected to sideline the German star for several months, severely impacting Bayern’s midfield structure heading into the Bundesliga’s final stretch.

In an emotional interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Donnarumma admitted his distress over the incident, stating, “I was truly shocked by what happened. I never intended to harm Musiala.” The goalkeeper’s remorse follows criticism from Bayern captain Manuel Neuer, who questioned Donnarumma’s post-match response, calling it “insensitive.”

According to his agent, Vincenzo Raiola, Donnarumma considered visiting Musiala at the hospital but ultimately sent a heartfelt message instead, overwhelmed by emotion. “Gigio is deeply sensitive. He couldn’t bear to see Musiala in that state. He even turned on his phone in the locker room — something he never does before the final whistle — to reach out and express his concern,” Raiola said.

The incident has reignited debates about goalkeeper-forward collisions and the fine line between assertive defending and dangerous play. Raiola added context by referencing previous incidents, including when Donnarumma nearly lost an eye in a clash against Monaco last December and when Neuer himself injured Gonzalo Higuain in 2014 during international play. “These are unfortunate consequences of a game played at such intensity,” he said. “Gigio is devastated and wishes Musiala a full and speedy recovery.”

This high-profile injury not only casts a shadow on PSG’s Club World Cup campaign but also deprives Germany of one of its brightest talents just as Euro 2028 qualifiers approach.
