Harden Targets First NBA Title as Cavaliers Complete Major Trade

James Harden is set to continue his pursuit of an elusive NBA championship after agreeing a trade that will see him join the Cleveland Cavaliers from the Los Angeles Clippers, with Darius Garland moving in the opposite direction.

The deal, which remains subject to medical clearance and official league approval, represents a significant shift in ambitions for both franchises. For Harden, now 36, the move is driven by a clear objective: securing the first NBA title of a career that already includes an MVP award and a place among the league’s all-time great scorers.

Cleveland currently sit fifth in the Eastern Conference, positioning themselves firmly in the play-off picture. The addition of Harden brings not only elite scoring but also playoff experience to a roster eager to return to championship contention for the first time since their historic triumph in 2016. Harden himself acknowledged that the competitive balance of the Eastern Conference played a key role in his decision, believing the Cavaliers offer a stronger pathway to silverware.

Harden departs Los Angeles having played a central role in stabilising a Clippers season that began with a 6–21 record. Despite speculation, he has rejected claims that he forced a move, instead framing the transfer as a mutual recognition that a long-term future was unlikely. Across five franchises, Harden has accumulated 28,805 career points, ranking ninth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list — a testament to his sustained excellence.

For the Clippers, Garland represents a younger cornerstone. The 26-year-old has averaged 18 points per game this season, though injuries have limited his consistency. Los Angeles will also receive a second-round pick in this year’s draft, adding future value as they reshape their squad.

If confirmed, the trade could add extra intrigue to Wednesday’s scheduled meeting between the two teams, though both players must pass medicals before any debut is possible.
