Ruben Dias Commits Future to Manchester City With New Deal Until 2029

Manchester City have secured the long-term future of one of their most influential defenders, with Ruben Dias signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2029, with the option of an additional season.

The 28-year-old Portugal international, who originally joined City from Benfica in 2020 for £65 million, has been a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s defensive unit. His previous deal was set to expire in 2027, but the extension underlines City’s determination to maintain stability at the back.

Dias made an immediate impact upon arrival, being named Premier League Player of the Season in 2020-21 after guiding City to the league title with one of the stingiest defensive records in Europe. Since then, he has collected four Premier League crowns, a Champions League, an FA Cup, and an EFL Cup across five trophy-laden years.

“I am incredibly happy today,” Dias told City’s media. “Manchester feels like home now, and the fans have been unbelievable since the day I arrived. When I look at the trophies we’ve won and the football we’ve played, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.”

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, hailed Dias as “a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch,” highlighting his importance beyond his defensive performances.

Attention is now expected to turn towards contract talks with several other key players, including John Stones and Bernardo Silva, who both have just a year left on their current deals. Meanwhile, club stalwarts Ilkay Gundogan and goalkeeper Ederson are also approaching the final 12 months of their contracts.

Phil Foden, Rodri, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake all have two years remaining, while rising star Rico Lewis is reportedly close to signing a new five-year agreement.

With Dias secured until the end of the decade, City have reinforced the foundations of a squad aiming to maintain its dominance in English and European football.
