“King” James Continues to Write His Name into the Record Books
LeBron James continued to add historic milestones to his résumé in the NBA after breaking another record related to field goals made, although his individual achievement was not enough to prevent the Los Angeles Lakers from losing 120-113 to the Denver Nuggets.
During the first quarter of the game, James surpassed the previous record held by legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most field goals made in NBA history. The historic basket came from a mid-range shot, taking the “King” to 15,937 made field goals and once again confirming his status as one of the greatest players in basketball history.
This new milestone comes only weeks after another record set by James, when at the age of 41 he became the oldest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, during the Lakers’ 124-104 victory over the Dallas Mavericks — further proof that he continues to perform at a high level despite his age.
James is currently playing his 23rd NBA season, itself a record, while speculation continues regarding his future and the possibility that he may retire at the end of the current season. The veteran star hinted at that possibility in comments to reporters last January when he said: “I don’t know what the future holds,” reopening the debate about when the curtain will fall on his extraordinary career.
Despite the historic achievement, James finished with 16 points in the loss to Denver and raised concerns after appearing to suffer an injury to his left elbow during the fourth quarter. The injury occurred when he chased a loose ball out of bounds and collided with the legs of a photographer seated near the court.
The game was paused for several minutes to allow him to leave the floor and receive treatment before he returned during the final two minutes, though he appeared to be in discomfort as he attempted to help his team in the closing stages.
Denver Nuggets, meanwhile, controlled the game from the outset and managed to maintain their lead for most of the contest. Although the Lakers cut the deficit to just one point with around two minutes remaining, the Nuggets held their composure in the closing moments to secure the victory.
The match carried particular importance in the race for the playoffs, with the Lakers currently sitting sixth in the Western Conference standings — the final position that guarantees direct qualification for the postseason — just behind the Denver Nuggets.
The Lakers also hold only a two-game lead over the Phoenix Suns, who themselves suffered a 105-103 defeat to the Chicago Bulls, leaving the battle wide open in the remaining games of the season.
