Argentina and Messi Reach a Second Consecutive World Cup Final
Argentina booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final for the second consecutive tournament after coming from behind to defeat England 2-1 in a thrilling semi-final at Atlanta Stadium, inspired by the brilliance of Lionel Messi, who provided both assists in the closing stages.
England appeared to be on course for only their second World Cup final—and their first since winning the tournament in 1966—after taking the lead in the second half. However, the Albiceleste once again demonstrated their resilience, producing another dramatic comeback to keep their title defence alive.
Argentina will now face European champions Spain in the final after La Roja eliminated France in the other semi-final, setting up a historic showdown between the reigning champions of South America and Europe.
The victory also sends Argentina into their seventh World Cup final as they continue their pursuit of a fourth world title, having previously lifted the trophy in 1978, 1986 and 2022.
Match Highlights
Although the opening half produced few clear-cut opportunities, the match was fiercely contested, with both sides engaged in an intense physical battle that resulted in numerous challenges and fouls.
England manager Thomas Tuchel made several changes to his starting line-up, introducing Reece James and Djed Spence in defence alongside Morgan Rogers in midfield. Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni also surprised many by leaving Rodrigo De Paul on the bench and handing Giuliano Simeone a place in the starting XI.
The first half was dominated by tactical caution, with only a handful of chances created. England’s best opportunity came when John Stones forced Emiliano Martínez into a smart save with a header, while Argentina came closest through a long-range effort from Enzo Fernández that drifted narrowly over the crossbar.
Argentina nearly broke the deadlock early in the second half when Julián Álvarez tested Jordan Pickford, who produced two excellent saves in the same attacking move to keep England level before the Three Lions struck at the other end in the 55th minute.
The opening goal came after Anthony Gordon met Morgan Rogers’ cross with a first-time finish beyond Martínez, scoring his first World Cup goal and his fourth for the England national team.
Argentina refused to surrender after falling behind and immediately began piling pressure on England’s defence. Pickford continued his outstanding performance by denying Nicolás González with a fine save, while the woodwork came to England’s rescue moments later when Alexis Mac Allister’s header struck the post.
González threatened again soon afterwards, but his header drifted narrowly wide before the decisive moment finally arrived in the 86th minute. Messi produced a perfectly weighted pass for Enzo Fernández, who fired a precise, powerful strike into the bottom-right corner to bring Argentina level.
The defending champions continued to push for a winner deep into stoppage time. After Mac Allister’s effort rebounded off the post, Messi collected the loose ball and delivered an inch-perfect cross into the penalty area, where substitute Lautaro Martínez rose to head home the dramatic winner and send Argentina into the World Cup final.
The victory marked Argentina’s fourth win over England in the history of the fixture, alongside six defeats and five draws. It also continued the Albiceleste’s dominance over the Three Lions in World Cup knockout matches, having previously eliminated England in the quarter-finals of the 1986 tournament and the Round of 16 at France 1998.
Attention now turns to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday evening, where football fans around the world will witness the highly anticipated World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.
