Inter Miami Down New England Thanks to Messi’s Brilliance

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi continues to prove that age is just a number, netting another brace in Inter Miami’s 2-1 win over the New England Revolution, setting an unprecedented record in Major League Soccer.

Despite turning 38, the 2022 World Cup champion has now scored two goals in each of his last four MLS matches, becoming the first player in league history to score multiple goals in four consecutive games.

Messi’s scoring streak began in late May with a brace in a 4-2 win over Montreal, followed by another two goals in a 5-1 thrashing of Columbus. However, Inter Miami then switched focus to the FIFA Club World Cup, where Messi scored just once in four appearances before the team was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain. The French champions went on to reach the final after demolishing Real Madrid 4-0 and will face Chelsea, who defeated Brazilian side Fluminense 2-0 in the other semifinal.

Inter Miami, under Argentine coach Javier Mascherano, returned to MLS action last Saturday with another 4-1 win over Montreal—featuring yet another Messi double, the eighth Ballon d’Or winner continuing his remarkable form.

Overall, Messi has now scored 14 goals in 15 MLS matches, placing him second in the league’s scoring chart behind leader Sam Surridge, who has played six more matches for Nashville than Messi this season.

Against New England, Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error to fire in a trademark left-footed shot. He added his second in the 39th minute, latching onto a long ball from his former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets.

Mascherano was full of praise for Messi, saying: “Naturally, Leo is a special player. To me, he’s the greatest to ever play the game. It’s amazing how he continues to do things we wouldn’t have imagined seeing at this stage in his career.”
