La Liga Kicks Off with Two 1-1 Draws

The 2024-2025 La Liga season began with two evenly matched 1-1 draws, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting campaign. Fans are eager to see the first appearances of the three title contenders—defending champions Real Madrid, last season’s runners-up Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid, who made significant moves in the summer transfer market.

In the season opener at San Mames Stadium, Athletic Bilbao and Getafe played to a 1-1 draw. The second match between Real Betis and Girona ended with the same result.

Athletic Bilbao, missing their star Nico Williams until he was subbed in during the second half, took the lead in the 27th minute with a stunning shot from outside the penalty area by Ohian Sunset.

Getafe responded in the 64th minute, equalizing through Chrysantos Oche, who headed in a cross from a corner.

The second match of the opening round saw Real Betis and Girona also finish 1-1.

Betis started strong, taking the lead just six minutes in with a powerful header from defender Marc Bartra.

However, Girona fought back, and Dutch substitute Gabriel Mishui, just 19 years old, equalized in the 72nd minute with a close-range effort.

The first round of La Liga will continue today, with matches concluding on Monday. Notably, Real Madrid will travel to face Mallorca, while Barcelona will visit Valencia.
