Liverpool Break British Transfer Record with £125m Move for Isak

Liverpool have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign striker Alexander Isak for a British-record fee of £125 million, a deal that could rise to £130m with add-ons. The Sweden international is expected to undergo a medical on Monday before finalizing a six-year contract at Anfield.

The Reds’ pursuit of Isak has been one of the defining stories of the summer window. An initial £110m offer in early August was rejected, but Liverpool returned with a record-breaking bid to secure their top target. The 25-year-old’s move comes after weeks of tension at St James’ Park, where Isak trained away from the first team and publicly accused the club of breaking promises over his future.

Isak joined Newcastle in 2022 from Real Sociedad for £60m and became their talisman, scoring 27 goals in 42 appearances last season while leading the Magpies to a Carabao Cup triumph—ironically netting in the final against Liverpool. His prolific form also propelled Newcastle to a fifth-place finish and Champions League qualification.

For Liverpool, this is the second major statement signing of the summer after Florian Wirtz arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116m. With additions including Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giorgi Mamardashvili, Liverpool’s spending has already surpassed £416m, offset by departures that generated close to £190m. The club remains in talks to bring in England defender Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

The Isak transfer eclipses the £107m Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernández in 2023, setting a new benchmark in British football. Globally, the fee ranks behind only PSG’s world-record deals for Neymar (£200m) and Kylian Mbappé (£165.7m).

For Newcastle, the sale of their star striker comes just days after signing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £65m—a move widely interpreted as a contingency for Isak’s departure.

If completed, Isak will become the third-most expensive player in football history, ahead of the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé. For Liverpool, it is a gamble of historic proportions, but one they believe could transform their attack for years to come.
