Shaquille O’Neal’s Team Wins the “All-Star” Title in Its New Format

In a bold new format, the 74th edition of the NBA All-Star Game took place on Sunday in San Francisco, stirring mixed reactions among fans and analysts.

Departing from the traditional single-game showdown between Eastern and Western Conference stars, this year’s event featured a four-team tournament, each with eight players. The aim was to inject more excitement into the game while giving young players greater opportunities to shine in this prestigious showcase.

Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green, who served as a TV analyst for the event, was highly critical of the new format. “You work all year to become an All-Star, and then you have to play up to 40 points, and that’s it? Come on, what are we doing? This is ridiculous,” he said. “This isn’t basketball.”

However, Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard had a different take after leading Shaquille O’Neal’s team to victory in the final. “I think they were just looking for a more competitive game and trying to find ways to make that happen,” he said. “Tonight felt a bit more competitive than in the last few years. That was the primary goal—to provide entertainment and increase competitiveness on the court, and I think we accomplished that.”

Capping off an action-packed weekend, stars Stephen Curry and Jayson Tatum combined for 27 points to lead Shaquille O’Neal’s team (Team Shaq) to victory in the All-Star final.

Playing at Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors, Curry sealed the win for Team Shaq against Team Chuck, named after NBA legend Charles Barkley, with a barrage of three-pointers that secured a 41-25 victory.

Shaquille O’Neal’s squad reached the final by defeating Candace Parker’s team 42-35 in the semifinals, while Charles Barkley’s team advanced by overcoming Kenny Smith’s squad 41-32.

Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum stood out, scoring 15 points and delivering a strong performance alongside a star-studded lineup featuring Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, and James Harden.

However, Team Shaq and fans suffered a major setback before the game, as Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James withdrew from the contest, missing what would have been his 21st All-Star appearance due to foot and ankle injuries.

“You won’t see anything from me tonight. Unfortunately, I won’t be putting on the jersey,” James said. “I’m still dealing with pain in my ankle and foot, so I won’t be playing, sadly. You all know I hate that, but I’m looking forward to seeing the new format of the event.”

Despite the absence of the 40-year-old veteran, Team Shaq remained dominant against Team Chuck, which boasted big names like Serbian star Nikola Jokić, Canadian sensation Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Donovan Mitchell.

Curry was named All-Star MVP for the second time in his career, having previously won in 2022. After the game, he reflected on the experience: “It’s a celebration of so many great things, the opportunity to play alongside these guys for as long as possible.” Acknowledging his teammates, he added, “It’s our responsibility to put on a great show, and I appreciate them for helping me do that.”
