The Algerian Team Angers Their Fans

After the Algerian national team lost to their Guinean counterpart with a score of 1-2 in the third round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a wave of anger swept through the football community, reflected in the comments and posts of followers on social media, while the Algerian media appeared deeply dissatisfied.

Despite Algeria remaining at the top of the overall standings, Guinea raised its tally to six points, placing second on goal difference behind the “Desert Warriors.” This matter caused discontent among Algerian fans, who expressed their dissatisfaction with the players’ and coach’s performance, considering the loss unacceptable, especially as it came at the “Nelson Mandela” stadium in the capital, Algiers.

Local media outlets called for the dismissal of coach Petković, holding him primarily responsible for the loss. Fans harshly criticized the coach, deeming his selection of the starting lineup poor and condemning his failure to make necessary changes during the match.

The fans directed severe criticism at Swiss coach Vladimir Petković, demanding his dismissal and holding him accountable for the loss. They also criticized the performance of some key players and called for the inclusion of new elements.
Fans also called for significant changes in the team, both in terms of players and the coach, to correct the course in the qualifiers. Meanwhile, another group expressed pessimism about the team’s ability to qualify for the World Cup, especially after this unexpected defeat.

Some commentators wrote that the mentality currently managing the team must be removed, pointing to the need for a change either in the coach or the players after their fighting spirit disappeared.
Another group believed that the blame lies not with Petković, his predecessor Djamel Belmadi, or any other coach. They attributed the defeat to what they described as the corrupt mentality within the current football system in the country.

The “Fennecs” will be required to regain their winning ways when they face their host, the Ugandan national team, next Monday in the fourth round of the qualifiers.
