“We Have a Problem” – Nuno Espirito Santo Blasts ‘Poor’ West Ham as Relegation Fears Deepen After Brentford Defeat

West Ham United’s season plunged into deeper turmoil after a damaging 2–0 home defeat to Brentford left Nuno Espirito Santo fuming at his side’s “poor” display — and admitting bluntly that the Hammers “have a problem.”

The loss marked the club’s worst-ever start to a home campaign in their Premier League history, a grim statistic that perfectly captured the mood inside the London Stadium, where empty seats and silent stands reflected growing disillusionment among supporters. Many fans boycotted the match in protest against the club’s board, while those who did attend witnessed a side lacking passion, ideas, and leadership.

Brentford were everything West Ham weren’t: dynamic, confident, and clinical. Igor Thiago opened the scoring after a defensive mix-up involving Maximilian Kilman and Alphonse Areola, while Mathias Jensen’s late strike sealed the victory — and intensified the boos from the few remaining home fans.

For Nuno, it was a sobering moment. In just his second match in charge since replacing Graham Potter, the Portuguese manager stood helpless as his team were outplayed in every department.

“Not good enough. Poor,” Nuno admitted post-match. “Brentford deserved to win. We all feel concerned — fans, players, staff. That concern becomes anxiety, and anxiety becomes silence. We have a problem, and it’s up to us to fix it.”

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was equally scathing, calling West Ham’s display “shocking” and placing the blame squarely on the club’s ownership. “It’s been poor for a while,” Carragher said. “West Ham are a massive club, yet they’re being run like it’s still a decade ago. You look at Brentford and Brighton — smaller clubs, but modern, forward-thinking, and competitive.”

Brentford’s victory, hailed by manager Keith Andrews as “our most complete performance of the season,” lifted them to 13th in the table. West Ham, meanwhile, languish in 19th with just four points from eight matches.

Nuno now faces a crucial test against Leeds United on October 25 — a clash that already feels like a relegation six-pointer. Unless something changes fast, West Ham’s crisis may soon become irreversible.
