Manchester City Sign Donnarumma as Ederson Moves to Fenerbahce

Manchester City have secured the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, completing a major goalkeeping reshuffle that saw long-time No.1 Ederson depart for Fenerbahce.

City confirmed they will pay £26 million for Donnarumma, who joins on a five-year contract with an option for an additional year. The 26-year-old arrives with a wealth of experience, having already played 412 senior club matches and collected 74 international caps with Italy. He was pivotal in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph, saving crucial penalties in the final against England at Wembley.

At PSG, Donnarumma became surplus to requirements after the French champions signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille, with his contract entering its final year. Now, Pep Guardiola adds yet another high-profile name to his squad, already strengthened this summer by the return of James Trafford from Burnley for £27m and the arrival of Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea.

Donnarumma, who rose to prominence at AC Milan as a teenage prodigy, expressed his delight: “To have signed for Manchester City is such a special and proud moment for me. I am joining a squad full of world-class talent under one of the greatest managers in football history. This is a huge honour.”

Meanwhile, Fenerbahce completed the £12.1m signing of 32-year-old Ederson, who leaves City as one of the club’s modern legends. Over eight years at the Etihad, he won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the Champions League in 2023, cementing his status as one of the most decorated goalkeepers in Premier League history.

Swiss defender Manuel Akanji also left City before the deadline, joining Inter Milan on a season-long loan.

For City, the Donnarumma deal represents not just a change of guard in goal but also a statement of intent as they continue to refresh a squad aiming to extend their domestic dominance and European success.
