Big Wins Put Bayern and Atlético Madrid on the Verge of Qualification
Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid both took a major step toward the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after securing convincing victories in the first leg of the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Barcelona escaped defeat with a late draw away from home, while Liverpool suffered a loss against hosts Galatasaray.
In the Italian city of Bergamo, Bayern Munich delivered a dominant attacking performance as they crushed hosts Atalanta 6-1. The match highlighted the Bavarian side’s superiority from the opening minutes, with Croatian defender Josip Stanišić opening the scoring early before the goals continued to flow. French winger Michael Olise netted twice, while Serge Gnabry, Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson, and substitute Jamal Musiala also found the net. Atalanta’s only goal came late through Croatian midfielder Mario Pašalić.
Despite the absence of English striker Harry Kane from the starting lineup, Bayern’s attacking power remained unaffected. Belgian coach Vincent Kompany opted to keep his top scorer on the bench, deploying an attacking quartet of Jackson, Olise, Gnabry, and Colombian winger Luis Díaz. With this result, Bayern continued their remarkable scoring form this season, raising their tally to 134 goals in 39 matches across all competitions, recording their 34th victory alongside three draws and just two defeats.
In the Spanish capital, Atlético Madrid moved close to securing a place in the next round after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5-2. The match began disastrously for the London side, who found themselves trailing by three goals within the opening 15 minutes due to major defensive mistakes, including two errors by Czech goalkeeper Antonín Kinský and another by Dutch defender Micky van de Ven.
This early collapse prompted Tottenham’s Croatian manager Igor Tudor to substitute Kinský after just 17 minutes, bringing on Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Atlético’s goals were scored by Marcos Llorente, French forward Antoine Griezmann, Argentine striker Julián Álvarez — who scored twice — and defender Robin Le Normand. Tottenham’s goals came from Spanish full-back Pedro Porro and striker Dominic Solanke.
Barcelona Escape Defeat
In England, Barcelona returned from Newcastle United’s staduim with a valuable 1-1 draw thanks to a late goal from young star Lamine Yamal in stoppage time. The match seemed destined for a home victory after Harvey Barnes found the net just minutes before the end, finishing a precise cross with a direct strike into the goal.
However, Barcelona were awarded a penalty after substitute Dani Olmo was fouled by German defender Malick Thiaw. Yamal successfully converted the spot kick in the sixth minute of added time, sending the ball to the right of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to secure an important draw ahead of the second leg.
Meanwhile in Istanbul, Liverpool suffered a painful 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray, with Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemina scoring the only goal in the seventh minute to give the Turkish side an important advantage before the return leg. Galatasaray have continued their impressive run in the competition this season, having already beaten Liverpool by the same scoreline in the group stage and eliminated Juventus in the play-off round for the Round of 16 after two thrilling encounters.
The round continues tonight with four matches: Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen face England’s Arsenal, Norway’s Bodø/Glimt take on Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon, France’s Paris Saint-Germain host England’s Chelsea, and Spain’s Real Madrid meet England’s Manchester City.
