Saudi club Al-Nassr has expressed its desire to play its upcoming AFC Champions League Elite match against Esteghlal Tehran on a neutral venue, citing safety concerns for its star player, Cristiano Ronaldo, according to media reports on Friday.
Sources indicate that Al-Nassr sent a message to Esteghlal Tehran, stating that the match should be played at a neutral venue due to Ronaldo’s unpleasant experience in Tehran last year. During his previous visit, the Portuguese superstar received an overwhelming welcome, with thousands of fans gathering outside the team’s hotel, leading to security concerns and logistical chaos.
Al-Nassr remains unbeaten in its last five encounters against Iranian clubs in the AFC Champions League, further boosting their confidence ahead of the clash. Individually, Ronaldo has played twice against Iranian teams, leaving his mark in both matches.
The first leg of the Round of 16 is set to take place next Monday in the Iranian capital, Tehran, but Al-Nassr is pushing for a venue change to avoid security concerns. However, Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj and Esteghlal Tehran officials have rejected Al-Nassr’s request, asserting that all necessary security measures have been put in place to ensure a comfortable stay for the team, including Ronaldo.
