Egypt Push Argentina to the Limit Before Exiting with Pride
Argentina avoided one of the biggest upsets in FIFA World Cup history by coming from two goals down to defeat Egypt 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter at Atlanta Stadium, keeping the defending champions’ hopes of retaining their title alive while ending the Pharaohs’ dream of reaching the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.
Egypt looked set to produce one of the greatest victories in the nation’s football history after dominating large spells of the contest and racing into a two-goal lead. Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Mostafa Abdel Raouf “Zizo” doubled the advantage in the 67th minute.
However, Argentina’s wealth of experience and world-class talent turned the match around in the closing stages. Cristian Romero sparked the comeback by pulling one back in the 79th minute before captain Lionel Messi equalized just four minutes later. Enzo Fernández then struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to send the reigning world champions into the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland on Saturday in Kansas City.
Despite missing a penalty in the 21st minute, Messi stayed confident and proved decisive in Argentina’s comeback. He provided the assist for Romero’s goal, scored the equalizer himself, and also initiated the move that led to the winning goal, once again underlining his ability to deliver on football’s biggest stage.
The Argentina captain also continued to rewrite the World Cup record books, taking his tally to eight goals at the tournament to strengthen his lead in the Golden Boot race, one goal ahead of both France’s Kylian Mbappé and Norway’s Erling Haaland. His overall World Cup tally also rose to 21 goals, extending his record as the competition’s all-time leading scorer.
Egypt Leave Their Mark
Despite the heartbreaking elimination, Egypt emerged from the tournament with enormous credit after producing one of their finest performances against the reigning world champions.
Captain Mohamed Salah once again led the attack with authority, while Real Oviedo winger Haitham Hassan proved one of head coach Hossam Hassan’s biggest tactical successes after being selected ahead of Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush.
Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir also played a crucial role in keeping Egypt in front for much of the match, making several outstanding saves, particularly during the first half. However, a lapse in concentration during the closing minutes ultimately denied the Pharaohs a place in the last eight.
Although their World Cup journey came to an end, Egypt leave the tournament having achieved several historic milestones, including recording their first-ever World Cup victory, progressing beyond the group stage for the first time, and reaching the knockout rounds before coming within touching distance of eliminating the defending champions.
Switzerland Prevail on Penalties
In the final Round of 16 fixture, Switzerland reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1954 after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time in Vancouver.
The match remained evenly balanced throughout the full 120 minutes, with both sides unable to convert the chances they created before the contest was ultimately decided from the penalty spot. Colombia missed two penalties, while Switzerland failed to convert only one.
The victory sets up a quarter-final game between Switzerland and Argentina, marking the first knockout encounter between the two nations in many years.
Colombia, meanwhile, exited the tournament despite possessing one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking units, led by Luis Díaz and 2014 World Cup Golden Boot winner James Rodríguez. They bowed out having conceded only a single goal throughout the tournament, but their defensive resilience was ultimately not enough to compensate for their lack of cutting edge in front of goal against Switzerland.
