Luis Suárez hit with extra three-match MLS ban after spitting incident
Luis Suárez’s fiery temper has once again landed him in trouble. The Inter Miami striker has been handed an additional three-game suspension by Major League Soccer following an altercation during the Leagues Cup final defeat to the Seattle Sounders on August 31.
The 37-year-old Uruguayan forward had already been given a six-match suspension by the Leagues Cup Disciplinary Committee for his post-match actions, but that sanction only applied to future editions of the continental tournament. MLS has now acted separately, ruling Suárez out of Miami’s upcoming domestic fixtures against Charlotte FC, DC United and Seattle.
Seattle ran out 3-0 winners at Lumen Field, a result overshadowed by chaotic scenes at full-time. Suárez was seen grappling with Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas before spitting on Gene Ramirez, the Sounders’ security director. The incident sparked widespread criticism and recalled the forward’s long history of disciplinary controversies.
Suárez later issued an apology on Instagram, admitting: “It was a moment of tension and frustration, but that does not excuse my reaction. I made a mistake and I sincerely apologise. This is not the image I want to give my family, my club, or anyone else.”
The striker’s reputation has long been marked by disciplinary lapses. In 2011, while at Liverpool, he served an eight-match ban after being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra. He also received three separate suspensions for biting opponents — during spells with Ajax, Uruguay and Liverpool.
For Inter Miami, who rely heavily on the veteran to lead their attack alongside Lionel Messi, the suspension represents another blow in their pursuit of consistency in MLS.
