Manchester United’s Future is Uncertain after the “Derby” Disgrace

Not too long ago, Manchester City used to worry about their visit to their city rivals, Manchester United, at Old Trafford. However, they once again painted the city blue after effortlessly defeating United 3-0 at their home stadium, reaffirming their recent dominance.

Since the last time Manchester United won the Premier League title under the management of legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson in his final season in charge (2012-2013), the “Red Devils” have been unable to outperform Manchester City in the Premier League. Given the significant gap between the two teams, this trend will likely continue this season.

City fans, who were present at Old Trafford on Sunday, mocked United supporters by chanting slogans expressing hope that the Glazer family, the owners of Manchester United, and despite their unpopularity among United fans, would stay in charge for ‘another ten years.’

Optimism soared when the Glazer family decided to sell the club in November 2022 after having acquired it since 2005. However, that optimism is short-lived, as British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe is now expected to acquire a minor stake after a year of negotiations.

United’s fall under the Glazers was simultaneous with Manchester City’s rise as a dominant force in English football, thanks to the significant financial support of Emirati Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed.

However, money isn’t the sole reason for the difference in the performance of the two clubs. United has spent more than City in recent years in the transfer market, but their spending of millions was wasteful.

In contrast, City’ brilliantly structured behind-the-scenes operation system complements the exciting display they show on the pitch.

Meanwhile, despite spending over €200 million on new signings, Manchester United has seen a terrifying decline, currently occupying the eighth place in the league. The team has suffered five losses in their first ten league matches, marking their worst start since the 1986-1987 season. They also face the risk of not qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, after losing their first two matches, before securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory against FC Copenhagen.

Former United captain Roy Keane, now working as a commentator for Sky Sports, stated, “United’s players are suffering in every aspect, both technically and tactically. The road to recovery will be a long one for this team”. United is undoubtedly in trouble after their recent harsh defeat in the city’s derby, raising questions about the club’s future.
