Wolverhampton Send Liverpool Back into a Losing Spiral

Bottom-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers turned the tables on their visitors Liverpool with a dramatic 2-1 victory in the dying minutes, dealing a painful blow to Arne Slot’s side in their bid to remain within the UEFA Champions League qualification places.

For much of the match, the contest appeared dull and lacking in attacking quality, before the drama erupted in the final quarter of an hour. Wolves struck first through Portuguese forward Rodrigo Gomes, who capitalized on defensive confusion to put the hosts ahead. Liverpool responded quickly through Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, who ended his Premier League goal drought dating back to last November to level the score.

However, the final word belonged to the home side. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Brazilian midfielder André unleashed a strike from outside the penalty area that took a deflection off a defender, wrong-footing goalkeeper Alisson Becker before finding the net. The goal sealed a second consecutive victory for Wolves after their previous win over fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Despite the win, Wolverhampton remain bottom of the table with 16 points from 30 matches, still 11 points adrift of safety. However, the picture has improved slightly for a side that collected only two points from its first 18 matches — the worst start in league history. Recently, the team has shown renewed fighting spirit and determination to cling to survival hopes, having drawn with Arsenal last month before securing two consecutive victories as they attempt a remarkable escape from relegation.

Liverpool, meanwhile, suffered their fifth defeat this season in stoppage time — a recurring issue that has cost them dearly on several occasions. Their tally remains frozen at 48 points in fifth place, three points behind both Aston Villa and Manchester United, and they risk losing their position should Chelsea win their next match.

Everton Bounce Back While Leeds Remain in Danger

In another fixture, Everton returned to winning ways at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 2-1 victory over Burnley.

The Toffees, who moved this season from the historic Goodison Park to their modern new home on the banks of the River Mersey, had struggled to find consistency on their new ground before securing their first win there in nearly three months.

Defender James Tarkowski opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a powerful header against his former club, meeting a cross delivered by James Garner. In the second half, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall doubled the lead with a well-placed finish after a pass from Senegalese forward Iliman Ndiaye, taking his tally to six goals this season.

With the victory, Everton climbed to eighth place with 43 points, moving closer to the European qualification spots. Burnley, meanwhile, suffered their 18th defeat of the season and remain second from bottom, eight points adrift of safety and only three points ahead of Wolverhampton.

Elsewhere in the relegation battle, Leeds United’s struggles deepened after a 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland, with Senegalese midfielder Habib Diarra converting a second-half penalty. The win lifted Sunderland to 40 points, comfortably clear of the relegation places and edging closer to securing their survival.
