The emergence of basketball

Birth of Basketball The history of basketball begins in the late 19th century in the United States. In 1891, a young physical education teacher, James Naismith, who worked at the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) Intercollegiate Athletic Club, was faced with the problem of student involvement in sports during the winter season. Soccer and rugby were not suitable for the facility and other sports required a large floor area. So Naismith decided to create a new game.

The first steps began on December 8, 1891, when Naismith came up with a set of rules for the new game and hung the basket at a height of 3.05 meters at the end of the gymnasium. In its original version, basketball was a game in which two teams of nine tried to score as many balls as possible into the opponent’s basket without using their hands. The first game was played on December 21, 1891, and a soccer with a burlap ball inside was used.

Starting at the YMCA, basketball began to quickly gain popularity at other colleges and sports organizations across America. In 1893, Smith College for Women, located in Massachusetts, became the first institution where women began actively playing basketball. The sport appealed for its dynamism and simplicity of rules, and soon basketball began to attract attention outside the United States as well.

The game gained international recognition in 1932 when basketball became an official sport at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. This opened a new era for the development and popularization of basketball on an international scale. Subsequently, numerous countries created national basketball federations and began to hold their own leagues and competitions. In 1949, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) was founded and became the main governing and development body for world basketball.

In the early 20th century, basketball became an official sport in the United States, and the first professional teams appeared. One of the most famous teams of the time was the Original Celtics, founded in 1915.  They were known for their unique game strategies and virtuoso skills, and were one of the first teams to tour the world demonstrating the game of basketball to the people of different countries.

Johnson was a master of the pass and created a unique atmosphere on the court. He won five NBA championships and was named Finals Most Valuable Player three times. Off the court, Johnson has become a successful entrepreneur and a strong advocate in the fight against HIV/AIDS. 

LeBron James was born in 1984 in Akron, Ohio. He is considered one of the most dominant and versatile players in basketball history. James has played for various teams in the NBA, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers. He won four NBA championships and was often recognized as the league’s most valuable player. James has strength, speed and basketball intelligence, and his contributions to the development and popularization of basketball are undeniable. 

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, born in 1947 as Ferdinand Lewis Alkender in New York City, is one of the greatest centers in basketball history. He spent most of his NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers. Abdul-Jabbar is known for his unbeatable jump hook and unrivaled arsenal of throws. He won six NBA championships and was named the league’s most valuable player six times. Abdul-Jabbar was also a strong advocate for civil rights and became an important figure in African American history.
