Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain Overpower Manchester City and Chelsea
Spain’s Real Madrid, reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain of France, and Norway’s Bodø/Glimt took major steps toward reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League after recording emphatic victories in the first leg of the Round of 16.
At the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in the Spanish capital, Real Madrid delivered an impressive performance against Manchester City, securing a 3–0 victory thanks to their captain, Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde, who stole the spotlight by scoring a first-half hat-trick.
Valverde’s goals came in the 20th, 27th, and 42nd minutes, giving his side a comfortable advantage ahead of the return leg. The achievement carries additional significance, as it marks his first hat-trick in the competition this season and equals the total number of goals he had previously scored in 75 Champions League appearances.
Despite missing several key players through injury — including French star Kylian Mbappé, England international Jude Bellingham, and Brazilian forward Rodrygo — Real Madrid managed to control the match and secure a deserved victory. The win also had a revenge element, as the Spanish side had earlier lost to Manchester City during the unified group stage of the current season.
A Strong Showing from the Champions
In the French capital, Paris Saint-Germain recorded a convincing 5–2 victory over English side Chelsea at the Parc des Princes, avenging their defeat to the London club in last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup final.
Bradley Barcola opened the scoring for the hosts in the 10th minute, before French full-back Malo Gusto equalized for Chelsea in the 28th minute. However, Ousmane Dembélé restored PSG’s lead shortly before halftime in the 40th minute.
Chelsea drew level again in the second half when Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández scored in the 57th minute. But PSG asserted their dominance in the closing stages, with Portuguese midfielder Vitinha scoring the third goal in the 74th minute following a pass from Georgian substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian then added two more goals in the 86th minute and in stoppage time (90+4), earning the Man of the Match award.
Bodø/Glimt also continued their impressive run in the competition by defeating Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon 3–0 at home, adding another notable victim to a list that already includes major clubs such as Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, and Manchester City.
The goals were scored by Sondre Brunstad Fet from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, Ole Blomberg in first-half stoppage time, and Kasper Høgh in the 71st minute.
Meanwhile, Arsenal secured a positive result by drawing 1–1 away to Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich opened the scoring early in the second half with a header, but Arsenal equalized late in the match through German substitute Kai Havertz, who scored against his former club from the penalty spot in the 89th minute.
With this draw, Arsenal maintained their unbeaten record in the competition this season after having topped their group with a perfect record.
After the match, Havertz expressed satisfaction with the result, noting that his team had not produced their best performance but still managed to secure a valuable outcome ahead of the return leg. He added that the support of the fans at their home stadium would play a key role in their quest to win and reach the next round.
