Sinner regains world No.1 ranking from Alcaraz

Italy’s Jannik Sinner has returned to the top of the ATP world rankings after defeating Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters, a tournament that awards 1,000 ranking points to the winner, allowing him to reclaim the No.1 spot in the latest rankings.

Alcaraz had previously taken over the top position from Sinner on November 10, 2025, following an outstanding season in which he showcased exceptional form. However, he has now lost his lead after failing to defend his title in Monaco during the latest edition of the tournament.

The clash between Sinner and Alcaraz highlights the continued dominance of the two young stars in the tennis world, as they remain firmly ahead of the rest of the field, including Germany’s Alexander Zverev, currently ranked third, who reached the semi-finals in Monte Carlo before being eliminated by Sinner. Meanwhile, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, ranked fourth, did not participate in the tournament.

The rankings also saw several changes following withdrawals and early exits in Monte Carlo. Last year’s runner-up, Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, suffered a disappointing second-round loss to Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot, dropping four places to ninth in the rankings.

This decline opened the door for other players to improve their standings, with Canada’s Félix Auger-Aliassime, who reached the quarter-finals, climbing two places to fifth—his best ranking since November last year.

American players Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz also benefited from Musetti’s drop despite not competing in Monte Carlo, with Shelton rising two places to sixth, while Fritz moved up to eighth.

Australia’s Alex de Minaur dropped one place to seventh after losing in the quarter-finals to Vacherot (27), who emerged as the biggest mover after reaching his first-ever semi-final, climbing to world No.17—his career-best ranking.

On the women’s side, Russia’s Mirra Andreeva climbed one spot to ninth after winning the Linz Open in Austria, while Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka retained her position at the top of the rankings.

Austria’s Anastasia Potapova also made significant progress after reaching the Linz final, jumping 43 places to No.54—her best result since reaching No.21 in June 2023.

It is worth noting that last week saw widespread participation from many players in the Billie Jean King Cup, while others opted for rest. This did not lead to major changes in the rankings but reflects the ongoing competitiveness and regular fluctuations in the world of tennis, both on the men’s and women’s circuits.
