Tchouameni thriving under Xabi Alonso’s guidance as Real Madrid prepare for decisive run

Aurelien Tchouameni believes he has found his rhythm at Real Madrid under new head coach Xabi Alonso, embracing a tactical evolution that has cemented his place as a central figure in the Spanish champions’ setup.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who grew up in Bordeaux and recently inaugurated a stadium bearing his name in Artigues-près-Bordeaux, has enjoyed a strong start to 2025. He has become a consistent starter for Los Blancos, something not every squad member can claim.

Under Alonso’s stewardship, Tchouameni has been deployed both as a traditional holding midfielder and as an auxiliary centre-back, depending on the demands of the game. This versatility has not only reinforced Madrid’s defensive stability but also highlighted why Alonso has described him as a “key pillar” of his project.

Reflecting on his new responsibilities in an interview with Marca, Tchouameni said:

“I’m happy with him, to be honest. It’s true that things are going well for me with the coach and that he has new ideas for me and the team. But I think things have gone much better for me since the start of 2025, and I was already feeling good under Carlo [Ancelotti]. The idea now is to focus on each game, help my teammates, and continue to grow.”

Madrid’s next challenge will be against Real Sociedad in La Liga before opening their Champions League campaign against Marseille on September 17. With Tchouameni in form, Alonso will be hoping his midfield anchor continues to deliver across both domestic and European fronts.
