A cinematic finale to the unified league phase of the UEFA Champions League

The curtain fell on the unified league phase of the UEFA Champions League, as Spain’s Barcelona and England’s Liverpool, alongside fellow English sides Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City, as well as Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon, secured direct qualification to the Round of 16. Meanwhile, France’s Paris Saint-Germain, Spain’s Real Madrid and England’s Newcastle United were forced into the qualification play-off round, along with Italy’s Inter Milan, Juventus and Atalanta.

The six clubs that qualified directly joined England’s Arsenal, who topped the standings with a perfect record (24 points), and Germany’s Bayern Munich in second place with 21 points, after both sides had already secured qualification prior to the final round.

Shock for Real Madrid and the Cup Champions

Barcelona sealed their qualification after defeating Danish side Copenhagen 4–1 at home, despite trailing at half-time. Barcelona fans experienced moments of anxiety when Icelandic forward Viktor Dadason opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but the Catalans responded strongly in the second half. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski equalized in the 48th minute, young star Lamine Yamal added the second goal (60), Brazilian winger Raphinha extended the lead from the penalty spot (68), and substitute Marcus Rashford completed the scoring in the 85th minute. With this victory, the Spanish champions reached 16 points, finishing the phase in fifth place.

In contrast, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain failed to secure direct qualification, settling for a 1–1 draw against Newcastle United and dropping into the play-off round. Portuguese midfielder Vitinha gave PSG an early lead in the eighth minute, before Joe Willock equalized for Newcastle deep into first-half stoppage time (45+2). Luis Enrique’s side ended the league phase with 14 points in 11th place, level with Newcastle in 12th, with both teams advancing to the play-offs.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, squandered a promising opportunity ahead of the final round after suffering a dramatic 4–2 defeat away to Benfica. The Portuguese side clinched a play-off spot in the dying moments on goal difference over three other teams level on nine points, while Real Madrid were left with 15 points in ninth place.

French star Kylian Mbappé scored both of Real Madrid’s goals in the 30th and 58th minutes, while Benfica’s goals came through Norwegian Andreas Schjelderup (37 and 54), Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis from the penalty spot (45+5), and Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin, who astonishingly scored the winning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time (90+8), handing José Mourinho’s side a dramatic place in the play-offs.

A superb evening for the English clubs

Liverpool completed the list of directly qualified teams by finishing third with 18 points, following a resounding 6–0 victory over Qarabag of Azerbaijan. The goals were shared between Alexis Mac Allister (15 and 61), Florian Wirtz (21), Mohamed Salah (50), Hugo Ekitike (57), and substitute Federico Chiesa (90).

Tottenham also booked their place in the Round of 16 after securing a valuable 2–0 away win over Eintracht Frankfurt, lifting their tally to 17 points and fourth place.

Chelsea, for their part, snatched direct qualification after a thrilling comeback victory away to Napoli, winning 3–2 to reach 16 points and finish sixth, while the Italian champions were eliminated after ending the phase in 30th place with just eight points.

Chelsea took the lead through Enzo Fernández from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, before Napoli responded with two goals via Antonio Vergara and Danish striker Rasmus Højlund (33 and 43). In the second half, Brazilian forward João Pedro led the comeback by scoring twice in the 61st and 82nd minutes.

Sporting Lisbon also claimed a dramatic 3–2 away win over Athletic Bilbao, snatching the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Sporting finished seventh with 16 points, trailing Barcelona and Chelsea on goal difference.

Manchester City completed the list of teams qualifying directly for the Round of 16 with a 2–0 home win over Galatasaray, courtesy of goals from Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki (11 and 29). Pep Guardiola’s side finished eighth with 16 points, occupying the final automatic qualification spot.

Italian teams as well..

Inter Milan, Juventus and Atalanta secured places in the play-offs after finishing 10th, 13th and 15th respectively.

Inter defeated Borussia Dortmund 2–0, while Juventus were held to a goalless draw by Monaco, who finished 21st. Atalanta, meanwhile, suffered a 1–0 defeat against Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise.

Atlético Madrid also joined the play-off round after finishing 14th, following a 2–1 home defeat to Norway’s Bodø/Glimt, despite taking an early lead.

The play-off line-up was completed by Bayer Leverkusen of Germany, Olympiacos of Greece, Club Brugge of Belgium, Galatasaray of Turkey, and Qarabag of Azerbaijan.
