Liverpool Defeated, while Real, Bayern and Atlético score five goals each

Liverpool suffered their first defeat in the UEFA Champions League, falling 1-0 away to Galatasaray, while Real Madrid, city rivals Atlético, and Bayern Munich all secured commanding wins on Tuesday in Matchday 2 of the unified group stage.

The night of big victories began with French star Kylian Mbappé, who scored a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s comfortable 5-0 triumph away to Kazakh side Kairat. Substitutes Eduardo Camavinga and Brahim Díaz added the fourth and fifth goals respectively, lifting the 15-time European champions to six points from two wins.

Mbappé opened the scoring from the penalty spot (25), doubled the lead after a long pass from Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois (52), and completed his hat-trick with a powerful strike from the edge of the box after a pass from Turkey’s Arda Güler (74).

Seven minutes from time, Camavinga netted his first-ever goal in the competition with a header following a brilliant run from fellow substitute Rodrygo (83), before Díaz rounded off the rout with a stoppage-time strike inside the box from Gonçalo Garcia’s assist (90+3).

Bayern and Atlético Showcase Their Firepower

Bayern Munich once again flexed their attacking muscles, hammering Cypriot hosts Pafos 5-1.

English striker Harry Kane was on target twice (15, 34), with Portuguese midfielder Raphaël Guerreiro (20), Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson (31), and Frenchman Michael Olise (69) also finding the net.

Atlético Madrid also delivered a dominant display, thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 at the Metropolitano.

The goals came from Italian player Giacomo Raspadori (4), Robin Le Normand (33), French playmaker Antoine Griezmann (45+1), and Argentines Giovanni Simeone (70) and Julián Álvarez from the penalty spot (82). Jonathan Burkardt netted Frankfurt’s lone goal (57).

Unexpected Defeat for Liverpool

Liverpool slipped to a shock loss away to Galatasaray, as Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen converted a penalty (16) to seal the win. It marked a second straight defeat for the Reds, following their 2-1 Premier League setback against Crystal Palace.

Last season’s Champions League runners-up Inter Milan continued their perfect start with a 3-0 home win over Slavia Prague.

At the San Siro, captain Lautaro Martínez scored twice (30, 65) while Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries added the other (34). Slavia, who began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Bodø/Glimt, suffered their first loss.

Elsewhere, Atalanta staged a comeback to earn their first victory, overturning a deficit to beat Belgian visitors Club Brugge 2-1. After Christos Tzolis put the away side ahead (38), substitute Lazar Samardžić equalised from the penalty spot (74), before Croatian midfielder Mario Pašalić struck the winner (87).

Marseille cruised to a 4-0 win at home against Ajax, with Brazilian Igor Paixão netting twice (6, 12), followed by goals from Englishman Mason Greenwood (26) and Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (52).

Disappointing Return for Mourinho at Chelsea

It was far from an ideal return to Stamford Bridge for Portuguese manager José Mourinho, whose new side Benfica fell 1-0 to his former club Chelsea.

Colombian defender Richard Ríos scored the only goal of the match with an own goal (18), giving Chelsea their first win after an opening loss to Bayern Munich.

For Benfica, it was a second straight defeat after their shock loss to Qarabağ of Azerbaijan, which had already cost former coach Bruno Lage his job.

Meanwhile, fellow London club Tottenham Hotspur had to settle for a 2-2 draw away to Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt.
