San Antonio Hold On to Their Star while Sacramento Adds a Big Name to Their Squad

The San Antonio Spurs have reaffirmed their commitment to French sensation Victor Wembanyama by extending his contract through 2027.

The Texas franchise had selected “Wemby,” now 21, as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, signing him to a three-year deal that included a team option for a fourth season — which the Spurs have now officially exercised. The financial terms remain team-friendly, as rookie contracts in the NBA are capped and fall well below the lucrative figures earned by veteran stars.

Wembanyama’s current deal is valued at $55 million over four years. He will become eligible for a new — and likely massive — contract ahead of the 2027–2028 season.

The 2.26-meter (7'5") French prodigy has not played an official game since his All-Star Weekend debut last February, after being sidelined by a blood clot in his right shoulder. Now fully recovered, Wembanyama appeared in four preseason games and is expected to make his regular-season return on Wednesday when the Spurs face their Texas rivals, the Dallas Mavericks.

Westbrook Enters His 18th Season

In other roster news, the Sacramento Kings have added veteran guard Russell Westbrook — the 2017 NBA MVP — who is set to embark on his 18th season in the league.

Westbrook, who turns 37 next month, joins the Kings after spending last season with the Denver Nuggets, where he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds across 75 games.

Reports indicate that the Kings maintained close contact with the nine-time All-Star since he became a free agent in June, following Denver’s elimination in the Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Westbrook — the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles (203) and a two-time scoring champion (2015 and 2017) — will be playing for his seventh team since being drafted in 2008 by the Seattle SuperSonics (later renamed the Oklahoma City Thunder). His career has also included stints with the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers.

A 2012 Olympic gold medalist with Team USA, Westbrook’s best season came in 2016–2017, when he averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 10.4 assists per game.

He now joins a talented Kings roster featuring Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Germany’s Dennis Schröder. The new NBA season tips off on October 21, with Sacramento playing their first game on the 22nd against the Phoenix Suns.
