Birth of Basketball The history of basketball begins in the late 19th century in the United States. In 1891, a young physical education teacher, James Naismith, who worked at the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) Intercollegiate Athletic Club, was faced with the problem of student involvement in sports during the winter season.
