Team World Crowned Laver Cup Champions

Team World clinched the title at the Laver Cup tennis tournament, hosted in its eighth edition in San Francisco, USA, after defeating Team Europe 15-9.

American Taylor Fritz sealed the victory for Team World by defeating Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

Fritz dominated the opening set against a visibly fatigued Zverev, who tried to rally in the second. Despite trailing 3-4 after a service break, Zverev earned his first break opportunities of the match, converting the third to level at 4-4.

After a quick hold of serve, Zverev forced Fritz to serve to stay in the set. The American held firm, pushing the match into a tiebreak, where he surged to a 3-0 lead. Zverev clawed back to 3-3, but Fritz closed it out by winning four of the final five points.

Speaking after his win, the world No. 5 said: “The energy coming from the team makes winning moments so much sweeter, and losing moments so much tougher because you’re playing for all of these guys.”

The American, who had already defeated world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz on Saturday during a clean sweep that put Team World 9-3 ahead, added: “That fires me up a lot.”

Alcaraz, fresh from lifting his sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open, had kept Europe’s hopes alive with a comfortable win over Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo 6-2, 6-1.

The Spaniard then teamed up with Norway’s Casper Ruud to reduce the deficit further, beating Americans Reilly Opelka and Alex Michelsen 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 in Sunday’s opening doubles.

But Australia’s Alex de Minaur, ranked eighth, restored Team World’s cushion with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Czech youngster Jakub Menšík, putting his side 12-6 ahead.

De Minaur had also defeated Zverev in both singles and doubles on Saturday.

The Laver Cup awards one point for Friday wins, two for Saturday, and three for Sunday, with the first team to reach 13 points crowned champions.

With these victories, Team World reclaimed the title they had lost to Team Europe last year in Berlin, where the Europeans lifted the trophy for the fifth time in seven editions of this special tournament co-founded by Swiss legend Roger Federer.

Team World’s triumph at the Laver Cup proves how quickly fortunes can shift in sport — and Betway, the number one betting site in Jordan, is where smart fans turn those shifts into opportunity.
