Kyrgios puts on a show and beats Sabalenka in “Battle of the Sexes”
Dubai hosted a unique exhibition tennis match billed as the “Battle of the Sexes,” bringing together Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and Belarusian star Aryna Sabalenka in an event that drew significant public and media attention despite its non-competitive nature.
The match, played on Sunday, was presented as a modern take on a historic concept that has long sparked debate about the differences between men’s and women’s tennis. This time, however, it was staged in an exhibition spirit aimed more at entertainment than at testing sporting superiority.
In order to create a sense of balance, special rule adjustments were introduced, most notably granting Kyrgios a playing area 9 percent larger than Sabalenka’s court, in addition to using only one serve attempt for both players, making the flow of the match unpredictable from the outset.
Nevertheless, Kyrgios, the runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022, managed to settle the contest with a 6–3, 6–3 victory over the world number one and four-time Grand Slam champion, in a match that lacked the usual power associated with the Australian player.
Kyrgios, whose ranking has dropped beyond 650 in the world due to injuries and a long absence from competition, appeared keen to avoid risks, relying instead on measured shots and technical touches, including underarm serves — a tactic he has previously used in official matches and one that has sparked considerable debate. It was unclear whether his restrained performance was due to the exhibition nature of the match or the different court conditions.
The “Battle of the Sexes” title inevitably evokes memories of the famous encounter held in September 1973, when 55-year-old American Bobby Riggs faced the leading female players of the era, first Australia’s Margaret Court and then American Billie Jean King, whose historic victory marked a turning point in the development of women’s tennis. At the time, female players were fighting for recognition and equality, while professional women’s tournaments were still in their infancy.
Today, however, the picture has changed dramatically. Women’s tennis now enjoys a firmly established status on the global sporting stage, clearly reflected in equal prize money at the four Grand Slam tournaments, as well as the widespread popularity of the sport’s leading stars, who have become major commercial figures. Even so, the Dubai exhibition succeeded in attracting around 17,000 spectators, including well-known sports figures, most notably former Brazilian football star Ronaldo.
Despite the strong crowd turnout, the match did not reach a high competitive level, but it fulfilled its entertainment purpose and once again reopened the discussion around gender differences in sport, and how such events can be used to highlight the game’s evolution and bring its diverse audiences closer together.
