Semenyo continues his explosive start and leads City past Newcastle

Manchester City recorded an impressive away victory after defeating reigning champions Newcastle United 2–0 in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final, putting Pep Guardiola’s side firmly on course for the final ahead of the return leg.

New Ghanaian signing Antoine Semenyo continued his fine form in a City shirt, scoring his second goal in as many appearances across all competitions. He capitalized on a perfectly delivered cross from Belgian winger Jérémy Doku in the 53rd minute, finishing from close range to give his side the lead at an ideal moment.

Semenyo, who joined Manchester City during the winter transfer window from Bournemouth for £65 million, was close to adding a second goal for himself and his team after firing a superb strike into the net. However, his celebrations were cut short following a lengthy and controversial VAR review, which ruled the goal out for offside.

Despite Newcastle’s attempts to get back into the game, particularly early in the second half, goalkeeper James Trafford played a key role in preserving City’s clean sheet. He made an excellent save to deny a powerful effort from Congolese forward Yoane Wissa that struck the crossbar, before the rebound fell to Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães, whose follow-up effort came back off the post in the hosts’ most dangerous chance of the match.

As Newcastle searched for an equalizer, Manchester City absorbed the pressure and gradually imposed control, drawing on their experience in big matches. In the closing moments, Frenchman Rayan Cherki settled the tie decisively, firing a powerful low shot in stoppage time that silenced the home crowd and secured a valuable 2–0 win ahead of the second leg scheduled for 4 February.

It is worth noting that Newcastle lifted the League Cup last season, claiming their first domestic trophy since 1955 after defeating Liverpool in the Wembley final. However, their hopes of reaching a second consecutive final now look slim following this defeat.

After the match, Semenyo expressed his happiness with the atmosphere at Manchester City, stating that he has settled in quickly and is enjoying every moment, adding that he is playing with confidence and a smile inspired by his previous experience at Bournemouth.

For his part, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe voiced his frustration with recent amendments to the competition’s regulations, which allowed Semenyo to feature despite having already played in the tournament with his former club. He felt that the rule had a clear impact on the outcome of the match.

In the other semi-final, Arsenal face Chelsea in another high-profile clash taking place later today, in a battle that promises to be no less thrilling for the second spot in the final.
