Sinner Becomes “King of Wimbledon” by Beating Alcaraz

At last, Italy’s Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1, got his revenge on Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, the world No. 2, to claim his maiden Wimbledon title—his fourth career Grand Slam—by defeating the defending champion 4–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–4 in a compelling final.

The triumph ends a five-match losing streak against Alcaraz, including last month’s epic Roland Garros final that lasted 5 hours and 29 minutes and saw the Spaniard emerge victorious in five sets. But on Centre Court, it was Sinner’s turn to shine, denying Alcaraz a third straight Wimbledon crown and a sixth major title overall.

This marked their third encounter of the season. Alcaraz had won the first two—in the Rome Masters final (Sinner’s first tournament back after a three-month suspension for doping) and the French Open, where Sinner led by two sets and had match points before Alcaraz roared back to win.

With this latest victory, Sinner not only became the first Italian man ever to win the Wimbledon title, but also snapped Alcaraz’s 20-match winning streak at the All England Club, dating back to their 2022 fourth-round clash—also won by Sinner.

Alcaraz’s overall winning run this season was halted at 24 matches, spanning from the Rome Masters through Roland Garros, Queen’s Club, and Wimbledon. He also missed the chance to match Swedish legend Björn Borg’s record for most Grand Slam wins (77) in his first 18 major appearances, remaining third behind John McEnroe (81) and Borg (77).

The Spaniard also missed out on becoming the fifth man in the Open Era to win Wimbledon three years in a row—after Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic—and failed to become the second-youngest player in that span to reach six major titles (Borg did it at age 22 in 1978).

“I’m living the dream. What an incredible tournament,” Sinner said after lifting the trophy. Turning to Alcaraz, he added: “Thank you for being the player that you are. It’s so tough to play against you. Keep going, you’ll lift many more trophies. I’m keeping this one though, you’ve already got two!”

Alcaraz was gracious in defeat: “I want to congratulate Jannik again. You’ve had an amazing two weeks and deserve this so much. I’m very happy for you. Keep going. It’s amazing to build such a rivalry—you’ve helped me improve every single day. Congratulations.”
