Sunderland Extend Home Fortress as Burnley’s Winless Run Deepens
Sunderland continued their impressive Premier League return with a commanding home victory over struggling Burnley, extending the visitors’ miserable run without a league win to 15 matches and further underlining the Stadium of Light’s growing reputation as one of the division’s toughest venues.
An early breakthrough set the tone. Habib Diarra’s ninth-minute strike, aided by a deflection off Axel Tuanzebe, gave the hosts a deserved lead and immediately placed Burnley on the back foot. From that moment, the contest rarely deviated from Sunderland’s control, with Regis Le Bris’ side dictating both tempo and territory.
The advantage was doubled just after the half-hour mark when Diarra finished off a slick move down the right flank, his low effort squirming past Martin Dubravka. While the goalkeeper may feel he could have done better, the goal merely reflected Sunderland’s dominance, built on sharp pressing and confident ball circulation.
The evening was capped in style by Chemsdine Talbi, whose spectacular 20-yard strike arrowed into the top corner to complete a polished display. The goal, the Moroccan international’s third of the campaign, came at the end of a 10-pass sequence — Sunderland’s joint-longest build-up to a league goal this season — highlighting the balance between their direct threat and patient construction.
This result marked Sunderland’s 12th consecutive unbeaten home game, the longest such start for a newly promoted top-flight side since Nottingham Forest’s famous 1977-78 campaign. While comparisons with Brian Clough’s title-winning Forest remain premature, the Black Cats now find themselves eighth in the table, just five points shy of the top four.
Across Europe’s major leagues, only a handful of elite clubs — including Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Paris St-Germain — can boast a flawless home record this season, placing Sunderland in rarefied company.
Diarra, filling in admirably during Granit Xhaka’s absence through injury, was central to everything positive, scoring his first league goal for the club since arriving from Strasbourg in the summer and constantly unsettling Burnley’s defence with his pace and direct running. His influence was particularly telling given Burnley’s failure to register a single shot on target, a statistic that summed up a disjointed and error-strewn performance.
For Burnley, the outlook is bleak. Second from bottom and now 11 points adrift of safety, their struggles in both decision-making and game management were evident, from ineffective set-piece routines to risky attempts to play out from the back that repeatedly invited pressure.
Instead of leaving Wearside with renewed belief, the Clarets depart with growing concerns that their Premier League stay may be painfully brief.
