Brazil and Germany Secure Convincing Victories Ahead of the World Cup
Brazil began their on-field preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Panama in a friendly match played at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
Despite the absence of injured star Neymar, Brazil needed only seconds to assert their superiority. Vinícius Júnior opened the scoring in the very first minute after receiving a pass from captain Casemiro, with the Real Madrid forward firing a powerful shot from outside the penalty area into the net.
Panama surprised the home crowd by equalizing in the 13th minute when Michael Murillo’s free-kick struck Matheus Cunha and deflected into the goal past goalkeeper Alisson.
However, Brazil restored their lead before half-time, with Casemiro heading home in the 38th minute following an excellent move involving Vinícius.
At the start of the second half, Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti made sweeping changes to his lineup, introducing an almost entirely new team, with only defender Léo Pereira remaining on the pitch. The move was designed to give as many players as possible an opportunity ahead of the World Cup.
The substitutions did nothing to reduce Brazil’s attacking threat. Instead, the Seleção became even more dangerous, scoring three goals in the space of ten minutes. The first came when 19-year-old Bournemouth prospect Rayan capitalized on a major mistake by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera to score Brazil’s third.
Lucas Paquetá then added the fourth with a superb strike from outside the box before Igor Thiago won and converted a penalty following another error from Mosquera to make it 5-1 in the 62nd minute.
Brazil’s dominance continued into the closing stages, with Danilo adding the sixth goal in the 80th minute after an impressive individual effort inside the penalty area.
Seven minutes before full-time, Panama grabbed a second consolation goal through Carlos Harvey, whose powerful long-range strike found the back of the net.
Brazil will play their final warm-up match before the World Cup against Egypt in Cleveland, United States, before opening their tournament campaign against Morocco, followed by Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
Germany Impress Against Finland
Germany also produced an outstanding attacking display, defeating Finland 4-0 in a friendly match played in Mainz.
The German national team are hoping to restore their global standing after suffering group-stage exits at the previous two World Cups, prompting coach Julian Nagelsmann to build a younger squad capable of competing for football’s biggest prize.
Germany had already enjoyed an impressive European qualifying campaign, winning five consecutive matches while scoring 16 goals and conceding just once, and they continued that momentum in their latest friendly.
The hosts had little trouble asserting control. Deniz Undav opened the scoring in the 34th minute before setting up Florian Wirtz for Germany’s second goal early in the second half.
Undav then scored his second goal of the evening and Germany’s third in the 57th minute, taking his international tally to six goals in just eight appearances.
Jamal Musiala completed the scoring six minutes after coming off the bench, marking his first appearance for the national team in more than a year with a goal.
The victory confirmed Germany’s readiness ahead of their final warm-up match against the United States in Chicago before beginning their World Cup campaign in Group C alongside Curaçao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador.
