Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay: Al-Owais Heroics Deny Bielsa’s Side in World Cup 2026 Draw
Saudi Arabia came within minutes of another memorable World Cup statement before Maxi Araujo’s late equaliser in the 80th minute rescued a 1-1 draw for Uruguay in a tense Group H meeting in Miami. Uruguay grew stronger after the break and largely dominated the second half, with the overall statistics underlining their pressure as they finished with 10 shots on target and 27 total shots. Yet Al-Owais was equal to almost everything Bielsa’s side threw at him, producing a series of crucial saves to keep Saudi Arabia within touching distance of a famous result.
Abdulelah Al-Amri had put Saudi Arabia ahead late in the first half, raising hopes of a result that would have placed them in early control of the group following Spain’s unexpected draw with Cape Verde. But Uruguay, after a disjointed opening 45 minutes, responded with greater intensity after the break and eventually found a way through thanks to Araujo’s close-range finish. Saudi Arabia defended in a compact block after taking the lead, forcing Uruguay into repeated shots from crowded areas rather than allowing clear central chances.
The defining figure of the match, however, was Mohammed Al-Owais. The Saudi goalkeeper delivered a commanding performance, producing a series of important saves to frustrate Marcelo Bielsa’s side and keep his team on course for a famous victory for much of the contest.
Saudi Arabia took the lead when Mohamed Kanno’s header forced Fernando Muslera into a save, only for the veteran goalkeeper to parry the ball into a dangerous area. Al-Amri reacted quickest, poking home from close range to give the Green Falcons a deserved advantage before half-time.
Uruguay had looked short of rhythm in the first half, with Darwin Nunez unable to impose himself before being withdrawn at the interval. Bielsa’s changes gave La Celeste more energy and structure, with Federico Valverde pushing into more advanced positions and substitutes Agustin Canobbio and Nicolas de la Cruz helping Uruguay sustain pressure.
The South Americans eventually finished the match with 27 shots, but time and again they were denied by Al-Owais. One of his finest moments came around the hour mark, when he tipped Manuel Ugarte’s effort onto the post to preserve Saudi Arabia’s lead.
Yet Uruguay’s pressure finally told in the closing stages, when Al-Owais could only push Federico Vinas’ header into the path of Araujo, who reacted sharply to turn the ball home and spare Uruguay from an opening defeat.
For Saudi Arabia, the draw may not carry the same historic weight as their stunning victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, but it remains a significant result. Against two-time world champions, they showed discipline, resilience and enough attacking threat to suggest they can compete for qualification from Group H.
The point leaves Saudi Arabia with a clear opportunity. A win against Cape Verde would put them in a strong position to reach the knockout rounds for the first time since 1994, when they famously advanced from the group stage in the United States.
Uruguay, meanwhile, will view the result with mixed emotions. Their second-half improvement showed the quality Bielsa can call upon, but questions will remain over the starting line-up, the lack of first-half urgency and the attacking balance of the team. The late equaliser softened the damage, but changes are likely before their next match as they look to take control of their World Cup campaign.
Both teams remain alive in a group that already looks more open than expected. Saudi Arabia will take pride from a brave performance built around Al-Owais’ brilliance, while Uruguay will know that their margin for error has already narrowed.
