Spain Captain Rodri Named FIFA World Cup Player of the Tournament

Spain concluded their triumphant 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign by dominating the tournament’s individual awards after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Midfield maestro Rodri claimed the tournament’s highest individual honour after being named the FIFA World Cup’s Best Player, recognizing the pivotal role he played in guiding La Roja to their second world title. The Manchester City star returned to the outstanding form he displayed before suffering his serious knee injury, which had previously earned him the 2024 Ballon d’Or following his key contributions to Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League triumph and Spain’s UEFA European Championship success.

Rodri produced an exceptional tournament both technically and physically, serving as the heartbeat of the Spanish midfield throughout the competition. His influence was particularly evident in the semi-final victory over France, and he once again dictated the tempo in the final against Argentina, controlling possession, linking defense with attack, and helping to neutralize Lionel Messi and his teammates, further cementing his reputation as one of the world’s finest midfielders.

Spain’s dominance of the awards did not end there. FIFA also named Unai Simón as the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper after a series of outstanding performances that played a crucial role in Spain’s title-winning campaign. Simón conceded just one goal throughout the entire tournament, which came in the quarter-final victory over Belgium.

The Best Young Player award went to defender Pau Cubarsí, who established himself as one of the breakout stars of the World Cup. The Barcelona centre-back displayed remarkable maturity and leadership in Spain’s defense, becoming the fifth-youngest player ever to appear in a FIFA World Cup final, joining an exclusive list that includes Pelé, Giuseppe Bergomi, Kylian Mbappé and his Spain teammate Lamine Yamal.

Meanwhile, France captain Kylian Mbappé retained the Golden Boot after finishing the tournament as its leading scorer with 10 goals, despite France ending their campaign in fourth place. The Real Madrid forward finished comfortably ahead of his closest rival Lionel Messi, who concluded the tournament with eight goals after failing to score in the final.

Mbappé also became the first player in history to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in consecutive tournaments, having previously claimed the award at the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, ahead of Messi’s tally of seven.

The French striker further strengthened his place in football history by extending his record as the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup finals. His tally now stands at 22 goals, one ahead of the legendary Messi, who brings his World Cup career to a close with 21 goals.
