Yamal and Barcelona’s Fearsome Attack Claim the Super Cup from Real Madrid

With a stunning five-goal performance, Barcelona overwhelmed their eternal rivals Real Madrid, the defending champions, in a thrilling 5-2 “Clásico” at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium (The Jewel) in Jeddah, securing the Spanish Super Cup title.

Lamine Yamal (22), Polish striker Robert Lewandowski (36′ penalty), Brazilian captain Raphinha (39′, 48′), and Alejandro Balde (45+10′) contributed to Barcelona’s remarkable five-goal tally. French forward Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for Real Madrid (5′), while Brazilian Rodrygo added their second goal (60′), just four minutes after Barcelona’s Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was shown a red card for fouling Mbappé outside the penalty area, a decision confirmed by VAR.

This triumph raised Barcelona’s Super Cup title count to 15, surpassing Real Madrid, who remain with 13.

Barcelona, currently third in La Liga, reached the final by ending Athletic Bilbao’s 15-match unbeaten streak with a 2-0 victory in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Real Madrid, who also lost their La Liga lead to city rivals Atlético, defeated Real Mallorca 3-0 in the other semifinal.

In this season’s second “Clásico,” Real Madrid failed to avenge their earlier league defeat (4-0) to the Catalan giants on October 26, when they were unbeaten in La Liga.

French defender Jules Koundé praised Barcelona’s collective effort, stating: “We showed a lot of calmness and patience, knowing that if we executed the plan, we would win. I am very proud of the team. After the red card, we gathered and told ourselves we would get it done.”

He added: “We knew we would suffer and had to stay back to defend, but we had a big advantage in terms of goals and could not afford to waste it.”

Polish striker Robert Lewandowski shared his satisfaction with the resounding victory in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, saying: “We were good until last December, before a somewhat lackluster showing in La Liga, but things have completely changed.”

He emphasized: “I think the Christmas break was useful for addressing mistakes and improving certain aspects.”

Lewandowski revealed club president Joan Laporta’s comments after the match: “He congratulated us on our exceptional first-half performance and on winning the title.”

He added: “We were brilliant in the first half, but the last 30 minutes were more challenging due to our numerical disadvantage. However, even with the 5-2 scoreline, we were confident of victory despite Szczęsny’s dismissal.”

He concluded: “We know there are still many matches left this season. In the second half, we proved we can play with experience, even with fewer players.”

Barcelona’s victory, however, was dampened by the injury of key defender Iñigo Martínez. According to the Catalan newspaper Sport, Martínez suffered a muscular tear in his right leg’s biceps femoris muscle, sidelining him for approximately five weeks.

This injury means Martínez will miss Barcelona’s matches against Getafe, Benfica, Valencia, Atalanta, Alavés, Sevilla, Rayo Vallecano, and Las Palmas.

Uruguayan defender Ronald Araújo is expected to step in during Martínez’s absence. Araújo, who replaced Martínez in the “Clásico,” took on the captain’s role upon entering. Notably, transfer rumors link him to potential moves to England or Italy during the winter transfer window.
