$90 Million Make Durant the Highest-Earning Player in History

Star forward Kevin Durant will extend his contract with the Houston Rockets in the NBA for two years at $90 million, with a player option for an additional season.

With this deal, the 37-year-old two-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors will break the all-time earnings record in the league, reaching a career total of $598.2 million — surpassing Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who has earned $583.9 million.

Durant joined his fifth NBA team when he moved to Houston from the Phoenix Suns this past July in a seven-team trade — the largest in league history.

The 2014 NBA MVP also helped lead Team USA to win four Olympic gold medals. However, an ankle injury late last season sidelined him during a crucial stretch. This cost Phoenix the loss of six of their last seven games and an exit in the first round of the playoffs at the hands of the Warriors. The Suns went 3–17 in games without Durant in the starting lineup.

Last season, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game, marking his 17th season in the NBA.

Durant was eligible for a contract extension worth $120 million but agreed to a lower figure upon joining the Rockets, aiming to give the team flexibility to strengthen their roster, according to his agent Rich Kleiman. The player hopes the move will boost Houston’s title chances..

With $54.7 million in earnings for the upcoming season, Durant’s total over the next three years will reach $144.7 million after signing this new deal.

Durant made his NBA debut in 2007 and won two titles with the Warriors in 2017 and 2018.

The 15-time All-Star now joins a revamped Rockets squad that has retained coach Ime Udoka, agreed to a new contract with center Fred VanVleet (back from a knee injury), added New Zealander Steven Adams, and signed Clint Capela and Dorian Finney-Smith on free-agent deals. The team also features Turkish big man Alperen Şengün..

The Rockets will open their season early Wednesday morning against the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
