Villa Complete £18.25m Tammy Abraham Return as Emery Reinforces Title Push

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of England striker Tammy Abraham in a deal worth £18.25 million, bringing the forward back to Villa Park more than five years after his prolific loan spell in the Championship.

The 28-year-old arrives from Beşiktaş on a four-and-a-half-year contract, returning to the Premier League for the first time since leaving Chelsea to join AS Roma in 2021. Although Abraham spent the first half of the season on loan in Turkey, Beşiktaş activated their £11m purchase clause earlier this week before Villa moved swiftly to secure his signature for €21m.

Villa head coach Unai Emery had been keen to add depth behind Ollie Watkins and has admired Abraham since his previous spell at the club in 2018–19, when the striker scored 26 goals in 40 appearances to help Villa secure promotion to the Premier League. That campaign remains one of the most productive of Abraham’s career and laid the foundation for his subsequent rise on the European stage.

“Some clubs shape your journey and stay with you,” Abraham said after completing his move. “I grew here as a player and as a person. I’m back, fully committed, and ready to give everything.”

As part of the agreement, teenage midfielder Yasin Özcan will move to Beşiktaş, while Villa’s president of football operations Roberto Olabe personally travelled to Turkey last week to watch Abraham in action against Kayserispor — a sign of how determined Villa were to finalise the deal before the window closes.

Abraham could make his second debut against Brentford on Sunday, although he is ineligible for Villa’s upcoming Europa League fixture against Red Bull Salzburg. Villa, currently third in the Premier League and just four points behind leaders Arsenal, are also close to re-signing former midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan.

Abraham’s career trajectory since leaving England has been eventful. He joined Roma for £34m in 2021 and made an immediate impact, scoring 27 goals in his debut season and helping the Italian club win the Conference League. His 17 Serie A goals that year set a new record for an English player in a single Italian league campaign. An anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2023 halted his momentum, but he has since rebuilt his form, scoring 12 goals in 24 league matches for Beşiktaş.

The move back to Villa also strengthens Abraham’s hopes of an England recall ahead of this summer’s World Cup. Having taken a wage cut to complete the transfer, his return underlines both his ambition and belief in Emery’s project — one that could yet deliver silverware on multiple fronts.
