Sinner crowned in Madrid, achieves historic Masters milestone

Italy’s Jannik Sinner etched his name in gold in tennis history as he continued his remarkable run, claiming another ATP Masters 1000 title—this time at the Madrid Open.

The world No. 1 secured the title after a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory over Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a final that lasted under an hour. Sinner imposed himself from the outset, breaking early in the first set and dictating play throughout to win it comfortably 6-1. The same pattern continued in the second set, as he broke Zverev multiple times to seal it 6-2 without giving his opponent any real chance to respond.

Sinner also strengthened his dominance in their head-to-head encounters, recording his ninth consecutive win over Zverev, including four victories this season alone. Notably, the German’s last win over the Italian dates back to the 2023 US Open.

This title carries historic significance for Sinner, marking his fifth consecutive Masters 1000 crown, following triumphs in Monte Carlo, Miami, Indian Wells, and Paris. It is also his first title in Madrid, adding yet another trophy to his growing collection.

The Italian extended his incredible winning streak to 23 matches, highlighting his consistency at the highest level. His last defeat dates back to February, when he lost to Czech player Jakub Mensik at the Qatar Open in Doha—a result that now feels distant given his current form.

With this latest triumph, Sinner has now recorded 28 consecutive wins in Masters events, dropping just two sets along the way—an astonishing level of dominance in this category.

By achieving this feat, Sinner has surpassed the legendary trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, each of whom had previously managed four consecutive Masters titles. The Italian now stands alone with five in a row.

Despite this milestone, Sinner remained notably humble after the match, stressing that he does not compare himself to those iconic names. He acknowledged their exceptional achievements over more than a decade, stating that his focus remains on improving his own game and carving out his own legacy rather than chasing records.

Sinner’s path appears open for further success, particularly with his main rival Carlos Alcaraz set to miss the French Open (Roland Garros) due to injury—the only Grand Slam title Sinner has yet to win.

Before heading to Paris, the Italian will take on another key challenge at the Rome Masters in his home country, where he will look to avenge last year’s final loss to Alcaraz and enter Roland Garros in peak condition.
